Why is page-specific search engine optimization important?

Why is page-specific search engine optimization important?

Optimizing your website on a page-by-page basis takes a lot more time and effort than just throwing a bunch of text out there and expecting your website visitors and “search bots” (sent out by search engines) to figure it out. Since page-specific optimization does take so much additional energy, a valid question is, “Why is this detailed level of search engine optimization so important anyway?” Here are two important reasons.

First, it helps your reader understand what the web page is about. Visitors to your website can become frustrated if they can not understand what your web pages are about. Web content that rambles all over the place is not helpful to your readers and ultimately, not helpful to you either. Confusing page content that talks about many different things indicates a business that may not be well organized either. While this may not actually be the case, your website is THE first impression to many of your website visitors, so you want to look as competent and professional as you possibly can. Also, having one big page with many topics on it results in a somewhat long page with a lot of scrolling. Website visitors and search bots don’t care much for that either.

Second, it helps search engines understand what the page is about. When a search bot visits your site, they are trying to figure out exactly what each of your web pages is about so they can index them accordingly. A well focused page makes it easy for search bots to understand and rank your page accordingly, and the better focused your web page is, the better your rankings will be.

As you develop your web content on a page-by-page basis, you will also need to identify primary focus words, called keywords or keyphrases, for each web page. This topic is discussed in greater detail in some of my other articles, but for now, just think about a couple of keywords or phrases that are what each page is about and focus on them. Be sure to use keywords that your website visitors are more likely to use, not necessarily your industry or trade buzz words, because your website visitors don’t use that language and may not enter those phrases. A lot of this depends on who your visitors are and you need to focus on that above anything else.

With page-specific optimization of your website for search engines, you will have more pages, but they will be focused pages and you get points from both your website readers and search bot visitors. Remember, it’s about content first!

Important Note: Not everyone is good at writing website content or even explaining what their business or vocation is about. As important as your website is, it is worth investing resources in either a good search engine optimization (SEO) company or copywriter who can get your diverse thoughts and ideas into something your website visitors and search bots will be able to easily understand and even get excited about.

There are also more technical, behind the scenes tips and techniques that go hand in hand with page-specific search engine optimization and these are discussed in some of my other articles, so look for them.
