Why I No Longer Have a Cell Phone

I have grown up with technology, dating back to the earliest Apple computers in the late 70′s. I have also grown up with cell phones, those used-to-be giant plastic things you tried to hold in your hand. I have been through more cell phones and cell phone companies that I can remember. Recently, I switched to a Samsung Epic smartphone running the Android operating system. I am on my third Samsung Epic smartphone since last October. The first one just plain died...locked up...no fix. The second had two audio processor failures and eventually refused to connect properly to the Sprint network. Going through this process, including learning all the capabilities of a smartphone, installing/de-installing apps, etc., I came to fully understand just how much a smartphone is a hand-held computer that has phone capabilities as just one of its functions. (Actually, I already understood this technology shift, but my actions did not reflect my understanding.)

This new awareness has caused me to now treat my smartphone like a computer instead of like a call phone. Probably less than 10% of the device is actually a cell phone - the rest is all about productivity. Here are some of the changes I have made in how I use this smartphone device.

1) I now watch where I put the phone and I always carefully carry it. When thought of as just a phone, I tended to be less careful. I know it sounds strange, but changing how I thought of the device from a phone to a computer changed the *value* of the technology.

2) I am now very careful as to which applications I install and am quick to remove applications I end up not using very much. In my 2nd Samsung Epic iteration, my smartphone's battery was dead in less than 2 hours because of all the apps running on it, but in my most recent iteration, I can go nearly triple that.

3) Just like with a computer, I don't blank out the screen in 30 seconds. Instead, I keep it active for 10 minutes. This might sound like a battery waster, but it is actually a great time saver for me.

It's great to no longer have a cell phone. You should give it a try!

Re: Has anyone a good idea to sort this problem? Re: Has anyone a good idea to sort this problem? - David, I love that idea....and I love purses. I usually buy one that has a large cell phone pocket just inside and that's where I put my keys and my cell phone. But I've been thinking that the keys may be bad for the cell phone though, so I'm open to trying a few of the suggestions as well. I may just have to get several new bags/purses and just see which one is the most efficient. LOL
Re: Protect yourself from Hackers Re: Protect yourself from Hackers - Good tips ideasuniversity! So can I ask what kind of software protection you personally use for your computer? From my understanding, hackers are now moving onto attacking Macs more than PCs and also cell phones. Is having your cell phone data stolen a major concern for anyone? Does anyone have any cell phone "protection"?
Cell phone plans Cell phone plans - Hi Andy, I use a cell phone too, but as a result, did you find you were tempted into buying a plan with more daytime minutes and voice mail, perks, etc? Does anyone know of a good cell phone plan?
Cell Phones: blessings or curses? Cell Phones: blessings or curses? - Do you really want to be available for anyone and everyone on a 24/7 basis? What do I mean? A famous person once said that the more available you make yourself; the more available everyone will expect you to be. People will actually be annoyed if you are not instantly and constantly available rather than being pleased when you do call. People expecting you to be available all the time may be annoying. Cell phone calls follow you everywhere you are including your bathroom. Even during nighttime when you want to rest, cell phones continue to ring and annoy you. If it is important, no problem but if it is very menial, why you need to be bothered so late. Today in this modern society, we live in and the proliferation of cell phones we see people talking anywhere and everywhere. If used for business, this may prove to be very effective and worthy. However, for very menial issues being bothered in your sleep and even during your bathroom time may be quite annoying if not outright disgusting. However, if you make yourself available all the time, you created your own nightmare. Cell phone etiquette is getting to be a forgotten concept. You will see people talking on the phone loudly and disturbs people nearby in restaurants and even in offices. I am sure by now, once or twice in a meeting you will notice that when a cell phone rings, almost everyone around will immediately look for their cell phones. If you were the one talking, and then the person in front of you talks on his phone, how would you feel? I am sure you will feel belittled and ignored. Rude practice, and should be changed. It may help people who use cell phones to follow certain degree of etiquette with respect to the use of cell phones specially in places where you may seem rude if you use or even when your cell phone rings. When you are in a place of worship, it may be necessary to leave your cell phone in the house or at least turn it off if you do not want to be away with it. This is because ringing cell phone will not just disturb you while you pray it will also disturb others. You do not need to show off your expensive gadget in a place of worship. During meetings, please turn off your cell phone; it is rude to have your phone ringing while somebody speaks. Disruption may cause problems especially when the meeting tackles extremely important issues. However, if you are waiting for terribly important call, you may use the vibrate mode of your cell phone to alert you when a call is in-coming and leave the meeting if you need to answer the call. You may also inform the possible caller that you are in a meeting and that you cannot be disturbed. When traveling and if you are on-board an aircraft, you will be required to turn off your phone. This is because electronics devices may interfere with the aircraft’s avionics. Thus, it is a requirement to turn of your phone for safety reasons. However, for extremely long flights, airline companies allow cell phone usage at a certain time, if you really need to make a phone call, use this time allotted if necessary. Cell phone have become to be a necessity nowadays, that is why most people use it and cell phone manufacturers have continuously develop different usage and functions for this very small gadget. Be globally competitive, but you should understand that being rude is not part of modernity. Follow certain degree of etiquette; this will be very helpful to you and your business.
Re: In case of fire exit building before tweeting about it Re: In case of fire exit building before tweeting about it - This is really funny but it is the best instruction under the circumstances. People are so addicted to tweeting and chatting on their cell phone that it is causing a lot of distractions. Parent no longer enjoy spending time with their children at home. They are always busy chatting with their friends even at the dining table
