Now this statement probably runs a shiver up many business peoples spines. More and more I see projects that want search engine optimization done for a website and the method of paying for such services is "pay for results".
Now there are lawyers who operate this way. They are typically accident lawyers..if they don't win your case, you don't owe them any money. However those same lawyers will end up with half the money if you chose this method. So anyone who wants to lose 40 to 50 percent of their funds is likely to find a lawyer to represent them in an accident case. Another thing is these lawyers will not take your case if the probability of winning is less than 90%.
Now I know many of you are cringing at the thought of having another lawyer in your life but it is a fact of life. You are asking yourself where does this crazy SEO come up with a thought like that? I will list some thoughts for you so that you can better understand and be better prepared should you need to hire an SEO.
A lawyer is someone you hire to speak on your behalf, to a third party Judge or Jury, your choice. An SEO is someone you hire to optimize your website for a third party to use and / or judge.
The third party is much like a judge and jury in this case, a search engine is often the judge, and people are the jury. I don't like to call people who visit websites, users. If you think about it, in most cases, these people do not use the site at all. How can they be users?
Back to the subject at hand, lawyers and seos. Lawyers like to brag, and so to do SEOs. SEOs can be flamboyant and love to argue. Which lawyer is not flamboyant? and try to find a lawyer who doesn't like to argue.
Lawyers who win a majority of their cases correspondingly see a rise in the rates they charge others. SEOs who help a majority of their clients land their websites on the front pages of all major search engines indeed see the rates they can charge rise.
Lawyers often cut their teeth at large law firms, and after finding success will go out and hang their own shingle in the marketplace. So too will junior SEOs who are successful in the large marketing companies, eventually they will venture out on their own.
Lawyers will also specialize in a particular field at times as this often ensures a more in depth knowledge and the client has a champion who can perform even better and deliver a better return on investment. So too will SEOs start to specialize in niche categories.
Often time others will want to know why a lawyer or seo is so successful in comparison to their peers. Most lawyers and SEOs may know why, but like magicians, will never reveal all of the secrets.
If you find an SEO who will work on a pay for performance basis please be careful. Often these SEOs have had some minor luck ranking websites for keyword terms that nobody is using to search or are four or five words long and it would be almost impossible not to be able to rank well for.
Most often these type of arrangements become too long term to keep the SEOs interest. Most people won't work months on end without pay. Why would anyone think that an SEO is any different?
An SEO who accepts this type of work, typically feels he or she can leave the client work, with no regrets, especially given the fact they were not paid. So now you have a website that may, or may not be, search optimized correctly, and you are left holding the bag.
A better method of payment is known as pay for performance. Small monthly payments are made with bonuses for exceptional performance or meeting goals. So when it's time to hire your SEO remember why he or she is your second lawyer. One who while not solving your legal problems, could be expanding your net worth.
