SEO: Getting more bang for your Buck

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is a difficult business to understand. Many website owners think they can do it themselves. Some are successful, many are not.

Why?

It all comes down to understanding how the search engines work. And that takes time, effort, and a lot of study.

Before you get disheartened, remember that there are specialists around who can help you get your website listed at or near the top in the first page of results without you doing all the hard work. Of course, it costs money, but there are ways you can minimize the cost. Here's how.

1. Choose an expert SEO company. Look for a company that already has their own website listed at or near the top. If a company is selling SEO services and you can't find them on the first page of the SERP's (Search Engine Result Page), obviously they can't be very good. An expert has probably been in the business a long time, keeps up with the latest techniques, and has a proven track record.

2. Work with your SEO expert. Change the content on your home page frequently...at least once a month. But once a week is better. Search engines send out their spiders constantly to re-index pages that have been changed. Encourage the spiders to visit your site often and you will see better results.

3. Ask your webmaster to set up META tags at the top of your index page. If he doesn't know what they are, your SEO expert will help. But META tags are essential. Even though not all search engines use them, a large majority do. The meta tags are the TITLE, DESCRIPTION, and KEYWORDS that help the search engines index your site. Some search engines merely index on the content of your page, so if you don't have much text on your home page you stand less chance of a good index rating. Your SEOer will suggest key words to use, but you should also be aware of good key words related to your business. Make sure you give these to your SEOer. You should check your hosting statistics as well to find out what search words and terms visitors have used to reach your website. Incorporate these into your key words. Check the stats regularly and change your keywords as new search terms appear.

4. I'll repeat myself here. Work with your SEO expert. Give him links to websites you would like to set up reciprocal links with. Good reciprocal links boost your ranking. But beware! Choose your links carefully. Joining one of those sites that is composed only of links can be detrimental to your ranking these days. Google is penalizing link sites. Don't go down with them. When selecting a link partner find a website that is in a related field. Even linking to competitors can help both of you. If a visitor doesn't find what they want on one website, they may find it on the other, and of course this works both ways.

5. Ask your SEO expert to register your website with as many directories as possible. There are hundreds, if not thousands of them. Get listed in as many as possible. And place a link back to them in your website. I put a special table of links at the bottom of the home page with a lot of space between the footer and the links. Many directories ask for a link back. Putting the links on your home page helps give you more visibility in the directories.

6. I mentioned keeping up with the latest techniques in #1. This is essential. The search engines are continually changing their algorithms (programs designed to index websites). They don't tell anyone what the algorithms do, so we have to guess. But this should be an educated guess. Being members of SEO discussion forums is one of the best ways we stay up to date. We also have to experiment to see what works best. Ask your SEOer about this. If he doesn't know what you are talking about, you have your answer right there.

7. Pay for listings. This is not something we recommend to all our clients. But sometimes paying for a priority listing can help get your website listed much faster. If you need to start getting visitors to your site as quickly as possible, paying the premium is the way to go. However, a good SEOer will often get the same results by using advanced techniques without having to pay. Before deciding to pay for a priority listing, discuss it with your SEOer. Balance cost against speed and effectiveness.

8. Related to paying for listings is paying for Google Adwords. This is a great way to get your site in front of millions of people immediately. However, you should be aware that this could be a very expensive option. If you have a big budget and you want to get effective results, go ahead. When Adwords first started and very few people were using them, a click through could cost as little as five cents. These days, the same result could cost you tens of dollars...and remember that's per click through.

9. If you are in business you should be concentrating on your business. Do you have time to do SEO as well? Will the time spent repay you with increased business? Or will it mean losing opportunities? And don't assign the job to one of your staff just because they know how to knock out a web page. Webmasters are often not experts in SEO. To get the best results you need someone who devotes all their time to SEO.

10. Cost is always a consideration. I did a survey of costs recently to try and find out what a good median cost for SEO might be. But it was almost impossible to come to a conclusion. Some companies charge hundreds of dollars a month. Others only charge if they get results. Yet others will not even give you a cost until you have discussed their services with them. Obviously, you will have a budget, so start from that. Find companies willing to work somewhere within your budget and then check them out.

Remember that SEO is a very inexact science...in fact, it's more of an art than anything else. Knowing the basics is essential, but combining them with intuition and hard work gets results.

Don't think that paying for a three or six month period of SEO is going to bring millions to your website immediately. It doesn't happen like that. You may not even see very good results for up to six months. Some search engines take that long to include your website in their listings. Once your site is there it is a constant battle to stay at or near the top of the SERPs. SEO is a long-term ongoing solution. Your site may be at the top today, but then it could be pushed down by other websites. Your SEOer will have to work hard to get you back on top again. It's like climbing a ladder, only to be pushed down by someone landing on the rung above you all the time. You have to push them out of the way and climb up again. They will be doing the same thing too, so it's a continuous battle. Paying for a few months is worse than useless. Be prepared to pay your SEOer to keep working for you to get the best results.

Re: How can we replace plastic grocery bags? Re: How can we replace plastic grocery bags? - Plastic has improved all of our lives. Plastic is not the enemy. Plastic is mainly made of carbon hydrogen and oxygen. Plastic can be burned in a controled environment to boil water and generate electricity. The key is burning it hot enough to break the molecular bonds. Plastics and composites will overtake steel and aluminum for many of our products. For example the Boeing 787 a composite airplane that will use less fuel and require less maintenance. Soon "bucky paper" will be used for car chassis. Buck paper is super light and strong. Cars made of bucky paper will need less energy. Be it gasoline or electricity. Plastic bags work. Why replace them?
Adjust Your Prices Canada! Adjust Your Prices Canada! - I get annoyed when I go to the store expecting to get a deal only to notice that the store has not adjusted their prices. However, I do not think that lowering their prices is the only option, perhaps if stores provide the customers with extra "bang for their buck" or a unique experience when they visit their stored Canadians won't flock to the United States for better deals.

Plastic bags could be recycled to make, or be incorporated into, other products. That's a much better alternative compared to just throwing them away. Plastic in itself is great and provides many uses as you pointed out.
Profile: Essie Weingarten, creator of Essie Cosmetics Profile: Essie Weingarten, creator of Essie Cosmetics - Pop culture has its share of dynamic duos: Batman & Robin, Dolce & Gabbana, Brad & Angelina, and, as devotees of Essie Cosmetics' nail polish know, "Baby's Breath" & "Ballet Slippers." And what's Essie Weingarten, creator of Essie Cosmetics, wearing right now? Why it's "Mademoiselle" paired with one coat of "Pink Glove Service,"of course! It's this playful take on fashionable colors and color combos, coupled with Essie's chip-resistant formula, that has converted beauty professionals and customers into adoring fans and secured Essie Cosmetics' position in the $1 billion nail industry. As a little girl in Queens, NY, Essie was undoubtedly the youngest customer at local nail salons. A manicure was a reward her parents indulged her with on special occasions, and she relished the experience. She did, however, eventually grow bored with the limited selection of nail polish colors, and imagined that other women felt the same way. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology, she worked for Geraldine Stutz, the visionary behind Henri Bendel; Essie admired Geraldine's business acumen and was determined to learn from her mentor. Following a few more years in the fashion industry, Essie decided to address the nail polish niche that still remained untapped. In 1981, Essie launched her business in Queens by introducing 12 new polish shades that have since become classics in the nail industry. Twenty-six years later, she is still on top of her game and has transformed Essie Cosmetics into a $150 million empire. what we learned from essie: You have to find what works for you. You cannot overextend yourself. It's very important that you know exactly what you can handle before you get into it. making moves "I wanted more. My stint in the fashion world was done. It was time for me to move on and do something on my own. I knew I loved nail polish and I knew that there were no groundbreaking nail products out there that promised long-lasting polish, so I decided to run with it. I had identified a niche product and market and was excited to make the move." vegas, baby! "I said, 'Where am I going to get the best bang for my buck?' Las Vegas was the quintessential test market. There were cocktail waitresses, dealers, dancers, cashiers. Twenty-six years ago, there were not that many women working together in one geographically concentrated area. But Las Vegas was the exception. I went to all the hotels and casinos that had beauty salons and I left samples. By the time I got home, which was less than a week later, I already had orders. The calls kept coming in. I got calls from women in Florida, New York, California, and Illinois who were in Las Vegas on holiday and tried my product there. They raved that it was still on their nails a week later. I thought, 'My god ... I have a business!'" man's world "Back when I started, there weren't as many women in the workplace. Customers and clients would call up and ask to speak with Mr. Weingarten. I had to deal with chemists, box manufactures, brush manufactures, bottle manufactures. It really was a man's world. I quickly learned how to convert challenges into opportunities. I often compared myself to a bumper car: I hit a wall, turned around, and kept going. I met each roadblock with the following question: "How can I do it better, different, and put a spin on it?" That mindset helped me through it all. If you start to get negative or down on yourself, then you're done faster than you started. You have to keep yourself very positive and very focused." skin deep "Before you can expect anyone to believe in you, you must believe in yourself. It's that simple and that important. If you feel good and secure, you shine. You don't have to be the most beautiful woman in the world to look and feel great. If you put yourself together and make a statement, people respect you. And there is no better or cheaper way to change or spice up your look than with nail polish. I always say we are the cheapest addiction around!" the sweetest thing "Do you have any idea how many doors were slammed in my face? I lost count. Never, ever get frustrated. Perhaps they're not interested in your product or service now, but they will be. They just don't know it yet. When they come back, and they do, you are in the driver's seat. You set your terms. They want and need something only you can give them." networking "Networking to me is the most important business practice. I never burn a bridge. I still network with people I worked with in my first job at Bendel's. Women are an unbelievable resource for networking. They enjoy helping one another. You must have good follow-through, contacts, and networking skills to survive in business." fresh and fun "Every 90 days we come up with six new colors. Every color is very fashion-driven, because we rely on the current trends in fashion and design to inform us of what people will want to wear. If you change your nail polish, you feel like you're always wearing something new. We keep our customers guessing and wanting more. We don't allow them to get bored. Of course there are the classics that everyone goes back to, but change is good. It makes the product hip and makes our customers feel like trendsetters." essie moments "A lot of customers relate our colors to milestones in their lives. I can't tell you how often I've heard "Cotton Candy" and "prom" in the same sentence. I recently overheard girlfriends saying that "Bordeaux" is great for a first date. When I meet people and hear what certain colors stand for in their lives, it makes me feel so good. I love that I can make women feel great and I absolutely love hearing about how the nail colors speak to such personal moments in their lives." essie's tips for longer-lasting nails 1. Don't use your nails as tools. 2. A smoothing hand cream is a must. Essie has several kinds that match specific moods. If you're on vacation, try coconut pineapple. If you're feeling Zen, try the fragrance-free aloe. 3. You must use a base coat. Then follow it with two coats of color. After three days, apply "Good to Go!," a fast-drying topcoat. It keeps the polish looking wet and new and it's also protective for the nails. parting thoughts -"My greatest strength in business is ... I never give up." -"I am happiest when ... the ultimate spa or salon that I've always dreamed of having as a customer calls and becomes a new customer." -"Success to me means ... when you get all the wonderful press and endorsements without paying for it. And when I make people feel fabulous." -"I will retire when ... it's no longer fun. But it's still so much fun, so I don't see when I'll retire." -"I will always think of myself as ... fun-loving." -"I care most about ... making people feel good." -"I care least about ... money." -"The key to being a great boss is ... I don't ask anyone to do anything that I wouldn't do myself." -"Every entrepreneur should ... be passionate." This Featured Lady was profiled by Alexandra Salas, a Buenos Aires-based writer.
