Should You be Considering a Website Redesign?
Should You be Considering a Website Redesign?
Ok, so this is a loaded question. But you might want to consider this. Does your website have:
…a large banner at the top of the page taking up more than one tenth of the viewable area in your monitor? That's a good reason to redesign right there. Large banners take longer to load. And if it's a Flash banner, does it load too slowly? Remember, you only have 4 seconds to grab the visitor's interest and make them want to read more.
…one or more drop-down menus? These are usually controlled by Java script placed in the 'hidden' area at the top of your web page. Each line of code your browser has to read slows down loading. And the search engines have to get past all that code to find meaningful content before they give your site a ranking.
…a poorly laid out page? Studies show that visitors read web pages in an F pattern. In other words, they start at the top left of the screen, read across, and then their eyes switch back to the left of the screen and read across again. The further down the page they go, the less their eyes travel across the page. So, the top part of your opening page is the most important. Is it doing its job most efficiently? Anything below the first screen is probably not doing any good, either. Consider moving it to an inside page if it's not vital to your presentation.
…lousy content. Let's face it, we're not all great writers. If you prepared the content for the website yourself you could be too close to your business to write what your visitors really want to know. If you are not sure what content should be on your website, consult a professional copy writer.
…awful colors? Oh boy! A poor choice of colors will drive visitors away long before your page loads fully and they get a chance to read what your site is all about. Is this the worst website ever? >>http://library.thinkquest.org/11091/ihistory.htm<<
…lack easy navigation? Forcing visitors to "Click here to return to Home Page" so that they can find the next topic to read about is really, really annoying. Make navigation as easy as possible so that visitors can go to any page in your website in one click.
…force visitors to drill down two or more pages to find the information they are looking for? Bad idea.
If you answered 'Yes' to at least two of these questions, you should seriously consider getting your website redesigned by a professional.
