SEO Ranking
You just spent five thousand dollars redoing your website and it looks great. It’s got a great new flash introduction, lots of crisp graphics and content that will make your competitors weep. And yet, when you look at your regular site traffic statistics, it’s practically bare. Why is nobody coming to your site you wonder? Well, chances are, it’s because they just aren’t finding it. If you’re not coming up on the first or second page of search engine results for the keywords that are central to your business, then read this article to see how you can improve your SEO ranking.
First of all, let’s cover the basics. If your site currently does not have a very high Google page rank, then it’s probably not too late to change your website address. Typically, you want a URL or domain name that has at least one of your keywords in it. That is step number one in optimizing your site for search engines. Also note that purchasing a .com domain name extension will be placing your site up for the highest level of scrutiny by the likes of Google. Sites that end in .org, .edu, or .gov, or even .info tend to be safer from the risk of elimination.
Aside from your URL, you also want to make sure that you have keywords in all of your title tags, description meta tags, and keyword meta tags. And, although you need to be wary of overuse, you should try and create content that is keyword rich. Throughout your site’s body text, you want to place keywords directly adjacent to each other, although sparingly. Nobody knows the exact formula that search engine bots use to determine whether or not there is spamming, but you don’t want to risk being cut from their databases.
When creating the design for your page, you also want to be sure that you keep their sizes small. It’s better to have a lot of small pages with a lower file size than one enormously long page that exceeds 500K if you want to boost your SEO ranking. You should also be wary of how you designate your page addresses. While hyphens are a popular way to fill in spaces between words, the more you have, the more a page begins to look like spam. If your URL has more than give hyphens, get ready to be cut from search engines. Keep them as short and simple as possible; that will help people remember them more anyway.
While there are a number of positive steps you can take to improve your page rank, there are also a number of factors that can bring you down. Don’t create images with text instead of having actual text on your site – search engines won’t be able to read it. Don’t get linked to from disreputable sites, link farms, or sites that have no relevance to your own. It’s more about the quality of the backlinks you can get than the quantity.
These are just some of the basic steps you can take to improve your SEO ranking, but be aware that there are many more. Do your homework and take your site to the top!
