SEO Strategy

There are hundreds of millions of websites out there so why would anybody come to yours? Ok, you’ve got some great content, but how are they going to know that? How are they going to find your website in the labyrinth that is the Internet? Well, that’s where your SEO strategy comes into play. Unless you have a well thought out plan to get yourself to the top of search engines, nobody is going to know who you are. So, what exactly does that entail?

The first step in your plan has to be keyword analysis. This is basically where you are going to find your search niche. What is your target market searching for when they go online? You can’t just think about which keywords you’d like to be found under, but you have to be realistic. If nobody is searching for your ideal keywords, then those are obviously not the way to go. Find keywords with a similar meaning but a more popular search rate. Perhaps target your local area if the competition for the general keywords is too large. The key to all of this is relevance.

Secondly, you need to focus on actually designing your site in a way that will make it more easily readable to search engine bots. Avoid using frames, even though they might be easier to use for website design novices. Also, try to avoid using too many images or Flash. Sure, you can make your site pretty, but focus on relevant text as well. Make sure your links aren’t broken, and that all of your title and description tags are not only there, but filled with keywords.

The third step in designing your SEO strategy is to prepare your content. When you’re writing content for your website, remember that more is not always better. Like they say, it’s about quality not quantity. While you can use keywords here and there, a site that is too keyword heavy will risk being banned by search engines, and even after you fix your site, it could take a long time for you to find your way back up to the top or their rankings.

Another key factor is to focus on backlinks to your site, but remember that it’s not just about the number of them that you can get. Search engine bots don’t just look for links; they take into account the number of links on a site and the keywords around those links. So, if a website has a long list of links, your site included, but with no other text, it could actually do more harm to you than good. Focus on getting links from sites with similar keywords as you and avoid link farms at all costs.

Once you’ve worked on the above steps and submitted your site to the major search engines, make sure you perform a regular check of your site traffic reports, link counts, and keyword list. If your SEO strategy is not working as well as expected, then maybe it’s time to change something around.
