5 ways to eat your competition for lunch using google - Todd Jamieson

Google is one of the most accurate and usable search engines ever developed. The geniuses at Google Labs (labs.google.com) are always coming up with new innovative ways to allow people to search for information. With over a billion pages indexed, Google is the largest search engine and should stay that way for the foreseeable future. That being said, basically any information that you could possibly imagine is somewhere on Google including information on your company and your competition.

Here is how you can find out everything you can imagine about your competition in five easy steps:

1. Locate your competition's domain name.

2. Type in the Google Search Bar: link:companyname.com -site:companyname.com. This will show all web pages (excluding their own pages) that have a link pointing to your competitors web site.

3. Document ALL of the links in document (I use Excel personally).

4. Repeat the process except with a www in front of their domain name, then two more times but instead of "link", write "inurl".

5. Now the list you will be left with will provide the following key information about your competition:

a. FREE TRAFFIC: You will now have a complete list of all of the web sites that are driving free traffic to their web site. (begin submitting to this list right away!)

b. EVENTS/SEMINARS: Most seminars/events/trade shows are now advertised on the web. If your competition is speaking at an event or attending a trade show, this will most definitely show up in this list.

c. PRESS/ARTICLES: Almost all published articles are online. You will now have an up-to-date list of the next big thing your competitor is getting involved in.

d. SPONSORSHIP: Find out what sponsorships your competitor is involved in.

e. CLIENTS: Most companies keep an up-to-date client list, and sometimes even trade reciprocal link on their site (designed/developed by company xyz).

In conclusion, the analysis of all of this information will provide you with key information into the marketing activities of your competition. By collecting this information, you will be able to make internal adjustments in your marketing and sales initiatives and ultimately eat your competition for lunch!

Re: Would you pass on a media opportunity? Re: Would you pass on a media opportunity? - I don't know how it is now... but it also seemed as if a lot of my local Toastmaster groups only held meetings during weekday lunch hour (which isn't very practical since some people only have a 30 minute lunch break, while it could take 10+ minutes to drive to the location as well). I recall only 1-2 of which that were held at night and after work. Moreover, not many groups (if any at all) were offered during the weekends cause I guess Toastmasters target audience are business professionals who are typically married with children and other household obligations.
Re: HOW DO I STAND OUT FROM THE REST? Re: HOW DO I STAND OUT FROM THE REST? - I will like to ask you some questions. 1. What kind of online business are you into? 2.What kind of competition ar you contending with? 3.What is the rank of website on google? If you answer these questions, I will be able to answer your question very well
Re: Internet Marketing is the best business in the world Re: Internet Marketing is the best business in the world - Hi Kevin, I don't see high competition in Internet Marketing. 390,390 people searched on google for internet related business in July. If you play it right you will make money. You just need to stick to it, to make it work. I am also adding to it 9.You can start with little or no capital. 10. Your product can be in front of millions of people within 5 minutes using PPC
Re: Does it help to join business groups? Re: Does it help to join business groups? - Different groups can have a very different feel to them, so it's good to try out several. I was in a lunch group for a while that was very formal, and a bit expensive as you had to purchase the event ticket and the lunch. It was a small group, and they knew each other well. They were nice people, but there was really no opportunity for us to help each other -- more of a social thing really. I've also done chamber of commerce, or women's entrepreneur events. I always have a good time, but I haven't found many business leads that way -- most of the newer entrepreneurs often don't have the financial resources to hire others (at first anyway). I did get one big job back when I was a freelance writer from one of these events, however. I've met more clients through regular socializing surprisingly! Knowing a person through friends can make others feel more comfortable it seems.
Search Engine Optimization Search Engine Optimization - Just curious as to what others are doing to optimize their websites. I have received a page rank 5 from google which is very good in my line of business in comparison to my competition. I am still not coming close to being on the first page for main key word searches though, even though all of the websites ahead of me have a smaller page rank. Does anyone know how this works and what I can focus on? Thanks!
