Short on time ... why not use a shortcut? - Todd Jamieson

Short on time ... why not use a shortcut? - Todd Jamieson

In the web design business, like any business, time is money. A graphic or web designer needs to be able to quickly move back and forth between screens or manipulate images at lightning fast speeds. To reach these top speeds, the trusty old mouse just won’t do.

Thankfully, Microsoft and friends have created a number of shortcuts or hot-keys. There are probably thousands of these shortcuts but in our dealings with clients we have come across a few that they found really helpful.

The only criteria to use these shortcuts is that you are using Windows 95+ and Internet Explorer 5+. (Sorry Mac/Netscape users!).

Please note: All these commands are 100% mouse-free.

1. The “Shift in Between Programs” Move: Hold down the ALT key, with it still pressed down click the TAB key. Keep pressing the TAB key until you get to the program you want.

2. The “Open a New Web Site and Save the Old One” Move: Make sure to have a web site window open in Internet Explorer. Hold down the CTRL Key and then press the letter “n”. Voila! A new window will appear with the same web site, leaving your previous window intact.

3. The ”Kill a Web Pop-Up Window” Move: Ever had a pop-up window just magically appear? Well here is a quick way to close it down. Hold down the CTRL Key and then press the letter “w”. Your dancing monkey pop-up will be gone forever (until next time).

4. The “Back to the Desktop View” Move: To go from any window to your desktop is easy with the new Windows Keyboard. Here is what you do: Hold down the Windows Key (next to the ALT key) and then press the letter “m”. All your programs will be minimized and you be instantly teleported to the Windows Desktop.

5. The “Find a file in Explorer” Move: If you need to open a file, we can save you a few steps. Simply Hold down the Windows Key (next to the ALT Key) and then press the letter “e”. This will bring up the file explorer window where you find your file.We hope that you have enjoyed these hints and tips.

They might not make you the envy of your friends. But they will definitely help you speed up your day. For a full list of shortcuts there are thousands of resource sites on the Internet.
