Written by: Josh Arvin

Article Overview: One of the things that many affiliate marketers struggle with is driving a consistent amount of traffic to their blog. It is important to realize that the majority of your affiliate marketing blog will come from directly from search engines. Therefore, the most important way of increasing traffic to your site is through improving your results in search engines. One of the major impacts on your site's search engine ranking is the number of backlinks pointing towards your site.

How To Get More Backlinks

Backlinks are links on other website that point towards your own website. There are several ways to increase your number of backlinks which will lead to better search engine rankings.

1. Submit your site to Directories

Submitting your site to directories takes a lot of manual effort, and that is why many bloggers leave out this important step. The truth is that backlinks at all of these directories will go a long way in improving your sites PR. This is because these are quality backlinks, as you can see with PR numbers next to each respective directory. It is definitely worth your time to submit your site to these directories.

Some bloggers send their blog to literally hundreds of directories. I think that is pointless after a while since the number of directories with quality PR is limited. These are the top free online directories:

http://www.dmoz.org 9
http://www.lii.org/pub/htdocs/home.htm 8
http://www.femina.com 7
http://www.gogreece.com 7
http://www.sacentral.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm 7
http://www.worldhot.com/ 7
http://www.123india.com/ 7

http://www.ezilon.com/ 6

http://www.canadianeh.com 6
http://www.aardvark.co.za 6
http://www.nzs.com/ 6
http://www.aigam.com 6

There are paid directories also, but they are not all worth the money that they claim to be. I would first start off with the free directories and then work my way up from there.

2. Social Bookmarking Sites
Social networking sites provide quality backlinks similar to directories. However, social networking sites have the advantage in the fact that they will send direct traffic to your site. I receive substantial traffic from several of the sites below. Many bloggers will send their site to these social networking sites once, while other will send every single post. Sending every post will definitely improve your post's search engine rankings, but sometimes I am too lazy to do so.

3. Link Exchange

Exchange your link directly with other webmasters and bloggers. An easy way to do this if you have a blog is to exchange links with other bloggers in your niche, and add each other's link to your respective blogrolls. I have started to do this on my blog, and I have received some hits from sites on my blogroll. More important than the minimal traffic though are the quality backlinks. Backlinks from similar sites go further then backlinks from random sites. If you are looking for other users to exchange links with, check out http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=53 . If your link is on someone's blogroll who has 100 posts, then you have 100 backlinks already right there. If you do this with 20 blogs, then you have 2,000 quality related backlinks!

4. Buy Links

This is generally considered "Black Hat," but if done correctly you will have a PR ranking fast. Just go to Digital Point and buy a link from a high PR site which has the same niche as your own site. The link might be costly, but your PR should increase with the next update if they are quality related links. Google is known to punish those who they think are buying links, so it might be better to stay away from this option.

5. Forum Signatures

Every time you post on a forum, you will be leaving another backlink behind. This option is pretty straightforward

Re: How should i promote a new website? Re: How should i promote a new website? - [quote="Alan Mater":391s63q7] Submitting a website to the search engines is not the way to go about things. What you should do is get a link pointing to your site from another site. The search engines will naturally find your site and crawl it. This can be done by adding your site to link directories, blog commenting, rss submissions, article marketing, social bookmarking, etc. There's many ways to go about it, but that's all that needs done. Submitting a site to search engines will actually do more harm than good. Anelly, you've been given some great advice on how to promote your site. Article marketing, blog commenting, social bookmarking, forum posting, etc. are all great ways. Starting a blog and writing about your site and the product you're promoting is great as well. There's many offline strategies that work well, too.[/quote:391s63q7] Hi Alan, I completely agree with you. However, I don't remember where I saw this advice, but this guy recommended submitting to search engines ONLY ONCE, when your website is new and fresh, and never again! Didn't have time to try this, and I don't think is can do any harm, but only if you do it once. Backlinks are the only way to go.

When I started my new niche site I never once submitted my site to any search engines. Now I'm getting over 200 visits a day from Google and other search engines, and it has a PR 2. If you get a chance to ask Suzanne Morrison I'm pretty sure she'll agree that submitting your site to search engines is a waste of time. It's better for them to find your site naturally through links on other pages. I totally agree that backlinks are the core for getting traffic and high search engine placements. Make sure to use the keywords in those backlinks that you want to rank for.
