Creating Your Own Web Marketing Strategy
When I built my first website (a few years ago now), I naively thought, build it and wait for the money to come rolling in. Then I could relax, work an hour or 2 a day and become a millionaire...easily within a few months.
Well, that's what all the Internet Marketing ads said would happen.
It was a long, long way from reality.
I quickly found out that Internet Marketing is extremely complicated and is much more difficult than simply putting some keywords in the text of your site.
There was just so much to concentrate on and I didn't know where to start, so I found myself an Internet Marketing mentor. He was excellent.
One of the first things he said was, "You need an Internet Marketing Plan"
"What's that?"
"A web marketing plan, a web marketing strategy. Where are you taking your web business?
"I don't know", I replied.
I was asked 7 questions that I just couldn't answer:
1. "What's the strategy for your Internet Marketing business?"
2. "What are the latest trends in your area of expertise?"
3. "What are your customers looking for?"
4. "What products and services are you going to create and sell?"
5. "How much are you going to sell the products and services for?"
6. "How are you going to distribute your products?"
7. "How are you going to market your products and services?"
I had a huge amount to learn. But I was keen and I was committed.
Do you have an Internet Marketing Plan for your business?
Answering the 7 questions above would be a great start to creating your Internet Marketing plan.
The basic steps are:
1. Strategic planning
2. Trends analysis
3. Customer analysis
4. Product focus
5. Pricing strategy
6. Product distribution
7. Internet marketing
Step Number 1: Strategic Planning.
What is your overall strategy for your business? Are you going to create product after product after product in the same business areas or are you going to diversify into a number of different areas?
What is going to make your business stand out from the rest?
What are the overall aims of the business? Income? Sales? Products? Customers?
All these questions go into what you want your business to look like in the future. Knowing that will help you establish the steps you have to take today, tomorrow, this week, next week and next month to move the business forward.
Bear in mind, you never reach your strategy. Why? Because you should always be looking ahead and changing your business strategy.
Step Number 2: Trend Analysis
Understand the market that you are in. Study and research. Listen to the gurus. Analyse your competition. The more you know about the industry you are in and how you can succeed in it, the better.
Step Number 3: Customer Analysis
How much do you know about your customers? In order to effectively market to someone, you have got to know what he or she is looking for. What are their pains, their ‘problems'? The better you understand the type of person you are marketing to, the better. And please don't say, ‘everyone needs my product'.
Step Number 4: Product focus
If you know your customers pains and needs, then you can create and offer a product the customer wants. Here you want to build up to having several products on offer. Something for free, something under $10, something for $30, $100, $300 and higher.
Step Number 5: Pricing Strategy
This can be a difficult step. Get the price too low and customers won't buy because they have a perception the product is ‘rubbish'. Get the price too high and customers will just refuse to buy. Do some research. What are others selling a similar product for? Then decide on a price and see what happens. A couple of months later you can change the price. It really is a matter of testing.
Step number 6: Product Distribution
How are you going to distribute your product? Some Internet business offer physical products like CD's, DVD's. Others will allow you to download everything, instantly. Others allow you to choose and charge different prices depending upon which you choose - physical or download.
Allowing instant download is a great selling point because people want the goods they have just purchased NOW! You could then follow up with the physical.
Step Number 7: Internet Marketing
This is a huge subject, but basically how you are going to advertise your business on the Internet.
Newsletters?
Article Marketing?
Search Engines?
Blog Carnivals?
To be effective, most probably all of them.
Getting to grips with these 7 steps, will help you on your way to creating your web marketing strategy and help you be much more successful.

Starting a New Business
- Congratulations on the first step of deciding to create your own business.
First, you have to ascertain if you are going to be selling your products or services to people or to businesses.
People purchase products and services for three basic reasons:
•To satisfy basic needs
•To solve problems
•To make themselves feel good.
You have to determine which of these three categories your product or service is the solution to. Businesses, unlike individuals, buy products and services for three reasons as well:
•To increase revenues
•To maintain the status quo
•To decrease expenses.
Knowing the reasons why people/businesses buy, you should have a picture emerging of who you think your "Target Market" (or ideal customer) is. Once you have zeroed in on your solution, you are ready to create your Marketing Strategy.
If you look at any company that has grown rapidly over the past few years, (i.e. WestJet and Starbucks), it should demonstrate to you the importance of Marketing. In simple terms these companies have:
•Clearly defined what makes them different;
•Who their ideal customer is;
•How to reach them;
•Why customers should buy from them;
•And most importantly why customers should come back again.
It is strong Marketing Awareness that singles out the best companies.
I can not stress enough how important it is to create a "living" Marketing Plan before you even start.
I hope this helps a little in the creation of your plan. All the very best of luck.
Remember: "A Goal without a Plan is just a Wish"

Re: Best Internet Marketing Strategy
- Sometimes the best Internet Marketing Strategy can really depend on your business. It can depend on the particular industry and specifically it can depend on your competitive landscape which can vary from the low hanging fruit to highly competitive markets. I guess what I really saying is that it can vary from one scenario to a different range of strategies to another different scenario.
How can you determine which is best for your ideal audience(s)?
Outside of all of the technical aspects, which so many people tend to dwell on quite naturally, there is another missing element that is sometimes missing from the SEO/Social Media set of skills. Two principles to keep in mind when you are working on your "strategy."
1. The single biggest missing element is the one that puts you ahead of the competition in a major way. That element is "creativity." So many people spend hundreds of hours trying to replicate what others are doing. Creativity is the element that will allow you opportunity to become a leader (instead of just following the crowd trying to copy everyone else.) True creativity mixed in with your SEO strategy can position you as the leader and the next thing you know, everyone will be watching what you do and trying to follow your lead. But when you are the creator, it keeps you ahead of the game because you are growing in directions of your choosing and using your time to be productive.
2. The other element of any great Internet Marketing Strategy (outside of the technical skills and know how) deals with you delivery of information. Try to always remember that your strategies are not just there to help you pursue money and wealth, but you are writing to serve your audience. Why do people search the Internet in the first place. Often it is because they are searching or researching information based on the conditions in their lives. Consider the purpose that you write and create content and ensure you are creating the type of useful, helpful and engaging content that satisfies the reason someone chose to search in the first place. Remember that running a business is about making a profit, but even more important to remember is that life is about serving your readers and life is about helping people. Money comes and goes and everyone needs it to live. But people are eternal and how we care about our customers and readers will be evident in your work, whether you realize it sooner or later. Instead of going after the one hit type of sale or service, build within your Web strategy one of the most powerful strategies that can be built. I am referring to building clients for life by remembering that the Internet is not much different than the real world, or it does not have to be if you focus on building relationships using the World Wide Web.
I rarely share on forums because so many of them can become nearly like battlegrounds with people all trying to argue their points. But the reason I like Evan's forum here is because ever since I joined it, I've seen nothing but evidence of friends helping other friends and that's what makes this group so great.
Good luck on your journey to find your best Internet Marketing Strategy and I wish each and every reader here the very best of success along your path.
