Have you ever thought of why we are not recommended to link to a website page that is having more than 100 links? Yes, Google recommends that we need to keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number and fewer than 100 is optimum. Recently Matt Cutts from Google was talking about the same. Why Google gave provide that recommendation and what happens if you don’t mind it.
The reason what he says was because Google spiders used to index only about 100KB of a page that it crawls. So if the page has more than 100 links, there is always a chance that the page would be truncated and Google spiders won’t drink all the juicy links or information.
Things have changed and now Google spiders are boosted up with more energy, that it will index more than 100k of a page, but still considering the user experience, it is recommended to have up to a maximum of 100 links. Put the shoes of the visitor and look at the page, how you feel it. Now the real question comes here: Will Google consider my website as spam when it has 100+ links on a page?
Matt Cutts added, No, not at all. The “100 links” recommendation is in the “Design and content” guidelines section, and it’s the Quality guidelines that contain the things that we consider web spam (stuff like hidden text, doorway pages, installing malware, etc.).
If you end up with a links page where you have 100 + links, think this. Each page will get its share of link juice and when it comes to more pages, the link juice gets diluted. Why do we need to link to a page filled with loads of links? Anyways we don’t get any good link juice from it.. So before you go overboard putting a ton of links on a page, ask yourself what the purpose of the page is and whether it works well for the user experience.
