Meta Description Tags: There’s No Reason Not to Use Them

A meta description tag can be one of the most beneficial elements to add to your website when implemented correctly. It functions as a small preview or welcome to people who come across your website's pages listed in a search engine result page. When done correctly it can help drive traffic and bring in more clicks. You can write a meta description for every single page on your website. This provides a preview of each page that is indexed on Google that would draw in unique page views.

A meta description is a simple element inserted into the code of your webpage. It is a small text description of your page that offers a preview of your site on a search engine results page. It has zero bearing on where you show up on the search engine results page in terms of keywords. It is the first piece of text, other than your title tag, that potential visitors come in contact with. It is not something to quickly type up and post. The right meta description can attract more unique page views, hopefully leading to conversions down the road, so it's something to put some serious thought into.

Google allows for 160 characters in their meta descriptions, which is the shortest limit out of all search engines, so it's a best practice to have something at 160 characters or just below. This insures that your meta description will never be cut off and won't leave potential visitors with an incomplete idea of what your site can offer. If you don't consider yourself a writer, think about enlisting the collaborative help of someone who knows their way around the written word.

This is the meta description tag for the CNN.com homepage exactly as it shows up on Google:

CNN.com delivers the latest breaking news and information on the latest top stories, weather, business, entertainment, politics, and more.

This is a first rate description - It is concise, but not too short and it lets visitors know exactly what the website offers. More importantly, it is clearly written and professional.

If you don't insert an actual meta description tag in the code of your website you risk having a search engine trying to decide on what relevant text should be included under your title tag as a summary of each individual page. As of Sept 3, 2010, the NRA.org website does not have a meta description tag on its homepage. Under the title tag on the search engine results page the following text is shown:

While widely recognized today as a major political force and as America's foremost defender of Second Amendment rights, the NRA has, since its inception, ...

This provides would-be visitors with an incomplete idea of what the NRA stands for and what its website can provide visitors with. This does nothing to effectively market the site or bring in new visitors. This is essentially one big missed opportunity. Although a poor meta description won't cripple a website or render it ineffective, it doesn't help. Bottom line - if you can use it to effectively market your website, why wouldn't you?

As a rule of thumb, you need to keep meta descriptions succinct, unique, informative and if applicable, provide a genuine (not cheesy) call to action for each page. Try not to have a meta tag over 160 characters. Even though some lesser used search engines allow for over 200 characters, Google will cut you off after 160 with ellipsis.

Let's say that you run an online bookstore. You don't want a meta description like, "Buy Your Books Here! CHEAP!" It looks unprofessional and your website comes off as gimmicky. You want to have a description that sounds natural and organic. When brainstorming think about what makes your business unique, what special qualities your webpage offers to consumers, and express that in 160 characters or slightly less.

If my website offers something unique, such as rare or antique books and first editions, that is something to point out to consumers that could draw in unique page views. So instead of something generic and amateur like: "Buy your books here! CHEAP!," I want to try something along the lines of" "We specialize in the most rare and hardest to find books. Browse our online store to view extensive listings of our out of print and first edition collections". This meta tag is 158 characters, so it will never be cut off by any search engine. It describes a unique niche that the store fills and it provides a call to action for people perusing the web. Most importantly it's easy to read and flows naturally.

If you are writing your website in html, inserting a meta description couldn't be easier. This is an example of what a meta description looks like if you look at the source code of a web page:

META NAME="Description" CONTENT="optimized meta description here"

That is all you need! Once you put in optimized and high quality meta descriptions on your website it will go into effect the next time Google crawls your site. (this can take anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks) It's simple, easy and free, there is no reason not to do it.

Re: Website Ranking #1 in all Search Engines Re: Website Ranking #1 in all Search Engines - To get ranking on Yahoo and Bing you need to have correct Meta Tags as proper optimization is something Yahoo and Bing prefers. Apart from that try to create backward links from Yahoo answers, Wiki answers, Associated content, Flickr. Yahoo prefers these sites and even nofollow links.

Re: Search Engine Optimization Re: Search Engine Optimization -

Just curious as to what others are doing to optimize their websites. I have received a page rank 5 from google which is very good in my line of business in comparison to my competition. I am still not coming close to being on the first page for main key word searches though, even though all of the websites ahead of me have a smaller page rank. Does anyone know how this works and what I can focus on? Thanks![/quote:2p2i4nbc] What you have done is amazing. 6 Months to a page rank of 5 is great. How did you do it?[/quote:2p2i4nbc] Hi there, John Alexander here. I agree, that if you have a Google page rank of 5, that is great (as far as PR goes.)Keep in mind that while PR does have benefits, it has little to do with where your page actually shows up in the search results. Having a PR of 3 or higher is fine, but I would not get too obsessed with it. One of the benefits of a higher PR is that the robots will visit you more often and another benefit is they will tend to stay longer on your pages and also dig a little deeper. But when it comes to where you show up within the search results, you must remember that Google (or none of the search engines grade on an absolute scale. What that means is that how difficult or how easy it is to get your page coming to the top depends totally on how competitive your competitive landscape is. The more competition there is for a specific phrase, then the more you have to do some work to compete. One of the best ways to begin is to look for any errors that are easy to fix. Are you using any dynamic pages that may cause the search engines to loop into a spider trap? Always remember, for any design challenge there are multiple ways to fix a problem. Is there any duplication in your Meta Description tags or Meta Title Tag? I only ask, because many times I see this one in Web sites where people are not aware of how important it is for each Title and each description to be unique. By that I mean each Title should relate to what is actually relevant to the page. Same with the Meta Description. This error is so common, that I often see that once people understand and fix the problem, (easy to fix) they quickly lose any duplicate content penalty and sometimes can increase their traffic by 20% to as much as 50% once Google sees them as unique and relevant. I know this is fairly basic, but if you star with the easy things to fix, it can bring you much better focus to your pages and you want every page on your site to be like an information rich gateway to attract many new readers. Then as you learn more and more advanced methodology, because the basics are right, they ultimately will carry you through and keep your pages performing in a stable way. I hope that helps a bit. Remember, doing good keyword research combined with only mild optimization can make you money.
Re: Quick Ways To Utilize SEO Effectively Re: Quick Ways To Utilize SEO Effectively - 1. If you dont want too much competition from other SEO's, choose your keywords precisely. For example, Instead of keyword Loan choose keywords like Bank Loan, Equity Loan, Student Loan, Home Loan etc. Order of keyword also matter for search engines. Search engine treats ?Loan Equity? and ?Equity Loan? as different keywords. 2. Best seo practice is to get at least one of your primary keywords in domain or sub domain name of your website. You can use hyphens (-) to separate multiple keywords. For example: seo-service, seo-guidelines, free-seo each cover two keywords. 3. Get your second or third keywords in your directory name and filename. 4. Keep your webpage free from any syntax error, declare document type at the beginning and validate your HTML and CSS because search engine don?t like pages with too many errors. 5. Give a short Title in of your page in 3-9 words (60-80 characters) maximum in length containing your primary keyword. Remember it will be displayed in search results so choose wisely. 6. Try to include your most important keyword phrases in heading tags on your page if you can but keep in mind it should not be exactly same as title of your page. You can use (H1 H2 H3) tag for specifying anything important. To reduce size of heading use CSS. 7. Specify Meta keywords in heading of document. Limit it to 15 to 20 words. Although not all the search engines give importance but there is no harm doing it. Search engine like Yahoo still give it importance. 8. Write Your Meta Description tag attractive containing keywords because it will appear on the search engine result pages. 9. Use text for navigation menu instead of using images or Java scripts. 10. Try to include your most important keyword in hyper linked text and text and text that immediately precedes or follows the hyperlink. Do not use same keyword always use synonyms at few places. Just like instead of seo, I have use search engine optimization at many places on this page.
