10 Rules for Using Type on the Web

Typography Etiquette for the Web
Seasoned designers know that proper typography can lend so much aesthetically to a design and increase readability if used properly. With the advent of the internet, it seems as though everyone is on the net publishing their own site, posting on social sites. Type etiquette making it difficult for visitors to read or navigate. Most of these rules apply to building or maintaining your own website, however these can and should be followed whenever posting on the web.
UPPERCASE TEXT USAGE – it’s okay to use it SPARINGLY to make a point. Too much will appear as though you are yelling at your visitor. Experienced designers know that readers of English use the visual shape of the upper/lower case letter forms to read faster.
Font Selection – Times New roman - yes, it’s a “safe” web font found on all PC and Macs, but there are other choices. It SHOULDN’T be used, except maybe on headings, and very few sites are successful at incorporating this. Reasons NOT to use it:
Outdated, overused and screams amateur web designer
The nature of serif fonts are more difficult to read on a monitor. Using Times for print media is okay, but again – It’s outdated...
Add Comic Sans to this list of don’t use fonts unless you are using it on a website for preschoolers.
Underlining Text – inexperienced designers will underline text, not realizing that visitors will interpret that as a link - that simply doesn’t work.
Bold AND Italicized text – designers use one OR the other. Not both on the same text.
Type hierarchy (heading largest, subheading, bold items, body copy, captions smallest, etc) a hierarchy is essential in defining the visual structure of the site
Ellipses’ are 3 periods… that’s it, no more... not 4, not 5... just 3...
Centered text - unless it's a website displaying a wedding invitation or a using it as a heading of the article, don't center an entire body of text. This makes the text really difficult to read.
One space after periods. Not two. With the advent of computers and proportional spacing, two spaces are no longer necessary. If you're using a typewrite, then use two spaces after a period since all the letter-forms take up the same horizontal space to assist with reader legibility.
Mixing it up – multiple usage of various fonts, various colors, etc. Designers know that generally 2 type families make a design stronger, but having more as well as a pleasing color scheme, will cause visual chaos. Keeping things simple and consistent is key to a strong design.
Dashes – use proper dashes depending on the situation.
A standard hyphen is used to hyphenate compound words and between non-continuing numbers, e.g., phone numbers.
The en dash (ALT and 0150) is used to "connect continuing, or inclusive, numbers dates, time, or reference numbers." [Chicago Manual of Style, sec. 5.115] Think of the en dash as connecting items.
The em dash (ALT and 0151) - think of it as separating items, such as a break in thought or causing an abrupt change in sentence structure.

Re: Gap Between Rich and Poor Widens Re: Gap Between Rich and Poor Widens - THX GT Bulmer for your view. What was on my mind are the S.S. statistics; that 95% of the population end up with only a S.S. check by the time they're/we're 65. That's pityful in comparison to some of todays teens earning millions. Type "teen millionaires" in a search engine. I do believe that most of us squander 99%-99.99% of our God-given 'talents.' God Bless all.
Trump and Stewart Trump and Stewart - I really enjoyed Trump: The Art of the Deal and The Martha Rules. I think the best advice you can get is from people who have made it and not just consultants who haven't been there. Evan's site is great because of all the famous entrepreneurs and their advice directly from them. Donald Trump and Martha Stewart are 2 great examples of successful entrepreneurs and the books are written in their own words which I find extremely valuable and motivational.
Re: Google Local Tutorial - Free Online Advertising Re: Google Local Tutorial - Free Online Advertising - Hi GT, Thanks a lot for the referral. I have started signing up all my clients for Google Local. People are amazed that in two weeks they can have #1 listings for competitive local kewords. Tip: Don't stop by adding just one ad. As long as each page of your website is different and optimized for different keywords you should create multiple ad words for each page. Example: Type in "Minneapolis web development" in Google. You will notice we have two listings. One for our home page & one for our mission page. They are both optimized for "Minneapolis web development" so Google will approve both listings / ads. Jeff
Re: How should a young entrepreneur dress to impress? Re: How should a young entrepreneur dress to impress? - Type of dress is always the question on most new entrepreneur's minds'. Unfortunately, it all depends on the specific situation. If you are meeting someone for the first time, and it is in relation to business or potential business, then a suit and tie is the way to go. Stay conservative and don't go in with flashy ties. Get solid tone wear for those occasions. If you're meeting someone, and they are not unknown to you, then you can maybe afford to dawn a flashier tie or dress down a little. However, in all of my business dealings I would never go to jeans. I would always stick to dress pants and a tucked in button up shirt up top with a collar. Stick to dress shoes in both occasions, and try to find something that is comfortable. I have two pairs of dress shoes - one has laces and one does not. I frequently wear the one without because it is easier to put on and far more comfortable after a day of meetings and discussions.
Re: Doing what you love Re: Doing what you love - [quote="bmueller47":2mwe86yf]Hi Barbara, Quote: Maybe you can help me. I tried to quote some of your post, but for some it does not work for me. What is the correct procedure? Thankss [/quote:2mwe86yf] HI, Beat Here is the way I will be doing it from now on (so that I don't have to keep retyping the subject line.) After you finish reading a post that you want to respond to, just hit the QUOTE button at the top of the post. This will create a "new" post, with subject in the subject line, and all the text within [ quote ][ /quote ] symbols. Then, just go in and highlight with your mouse any text that you don't wan't to appear, and delete it, so you're left only with the sentence or two that you specifically want to respond to. Type your response OUTSIDE the final [ / quote ] symbol.
