5 SEO Myths Debunked
Myth 1
SEO/SEM requires such a high skill level that I must outsource to achieve the desired outcomes.
Whilst optimization and marketing does require a certain skill-set and techniques need to be looked at as a whole process, 99% of business owners, web developers or anyone with a thirst for learning can build a solid foundation of knowledge and gain the required skills through training. There is no reason at all that any proficient computer user cannot grasp the necessary requirements to build and maintain high-performance web pages, even for the most competitive keyword phrases.
Myth 2
I have built my website and now I am being told it could take 6 months before I see results from the search engines.
With a website that is built from the ground up with optimization in mind, there is no reason you should not be seeing search engine results within weeks. The knowledge here comes from a few factors - building your website in a manner that is 'search engine friendly', quality keyword research, optimized web pages and how you go about achieving your indexing within those search engines.
Myth 3
It is all about the rankings.
A #1 ranking for any keyword phrase means absolutely nothing if it does not drive quality traffic to your site - and that is just the first step. More importantly, your website needs the ability to convert its visitors into sales or lead generations or whatever the sites purpose is. High profile search results without quality traffic and site conversions equals disappointing online growth.
Myth 4
Submitting my website to the search engines is the best way to get indexed.
No it is not! Consider how many websites are submitted to the major search engines on a daily basis - thousands. A more beneficial practice to follow is not to submit your site at all. Instead, as soon as your site goes live, get some excellent quality (ie relevant) back links and let the search engines find you.
Myth 5
I should register multiple domain names to cover the keyword phrases I am targeting.
Whilst it is valuable to include a keyword phrase within your domain, buying multiple domains to cover various keywords is not practical and is unnecessary. Instead, continually add quality content to your optimized website, focusing each page on a unique keyword phrase.
Consider this - the effort to build and consistently maintain multiple websites would be enormous. For each site to be of a quality significant enough to maintain high search engine results, you would need sufficient worthy content and the continual growth of back links, and that is just two factors. Without this, you are relying on the keywords within the URL to hold your high ranking position. What if the algorithm changes? Imagine if 50 or more of these websites dropped from the top 10 overnight because of a Google update. How much revenue would be at stake? And that is what can happen when you optimize based solely on algorithms.
