What is a Web Browser?

Everyone uses a web browser of some sort to access the internet. They are simple software applications installed on your computer hard drive that, when opened, access the internet and allow you to type in direct web addresses or use search engines to search the web for information.

Web Browsers vs. Search Engines

It is important to recognise that web browsers and search engines are not the same thing. Web browsers are software applications, or computer programs, while search engines are usually websites created to gather and retrieve information from the internet. You cannot access a search engine without first using some sort of web browser to connect your computer to the internet.

Web Browser History

Web browsers date back to the end of the 80's, around the time the World Wide Web was becoming publicly popular. As a matter of fact, the first browser, created in 1991 by Tim Berners-Lee, was actually called WorldWideWeb. Only a few years later, in 1993, new browsers were introduced to the market, including the NCSA Mosiac, which later led to the creation of Netscape. Microsoft did not introduce their browser, Internet Explorer, until 1995. Many others have followed since, and some have failed while others have become wildly successful.

How Web Browsers Work

Web browsers work by bringing information from the internet to an individual's desktop. Each website or piece of information on the internet has a unique URI, or Uniform Resource Identifier, also recognised as a web address. An example,of aURI is http://www.somedomain.com.

Each web browser is specifically designed to support the type of information placed on a web page, including graphics, audio, video, Flash and Java. If your web browser does not have these capabilities you may not be able to see everything on the site you visit. You may have to either use a different browser or install a plug-in or patch that gives your browser the capabilities it is missing.

Popular Web Browsers

There are quite a few different web browsers available today but only a few have been able to withstand the test of time. The major, and most widely used, web browsers include Internet Explorer, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and the newly released Google Chrome.

Every web browser has its own unique design and set of functions, each aiming to make your internet experience as technologically enhanced as possible while remaining simple to use. You may want to give one or two different browsers a try to see which works best for you!
