An Introduction To The Art Of Search Engine Optimization
Every day, new Web sites are popping up all over the internet. Your site is battling for attention along with millions and millions of others. How can people find you in the vastness of cyberspace?
One technique you can use is search engine optimization, or SEO for short. Simply put, SEO is creating Web pages that are "search engine friendly." In other words, it means making a site easier for people to find when they are conducting a search for information via a search engine such as Yahoo or Google.
The most important way to optimize your site for search engines is to make sure all content on your Web pages is rich in keywords. Keywords are those terms that people might use if they are trying to find something that your site has to offer. For example, if your business is selling cameras, you would want to include the word "camera" on our site in as many ways as possible, in terms like "buy a camera," "best cameras," "camera for sale," and so forth.
But just peppering your site with these terms, without any additional information, is not enough for SEO. The terms should appear as part of a greater context, such as reviews of various camera products, articles about photography tips and techniques, etc. Terms related to your main term-in this example, words such as digital, photography, film, pictures and so forth-strengthen the optimization of your site even more.
Here are some more SEO tips you can use to make your site easier for people to locate:
Include your keywords in all major headings and sub-headings on your site. Search engines are attracted to these headings, and latch onto them.
Name your site's pages, rather than using a generic name assigned by your site builder to improve optimization. Rather than page2.html, for instance, the page should be named something like best-cameras-for-beginners.html.
Also use keywords on your site's navigation buttons or links, rather than simply use images or non-relevant terms for people to click on to move from page to page.
Keep your site simple. Web pages that are attractive and professional, but not too fancy, are more search engine friendly than those that use a lot of flash navigation, frames or other more complex Web design techniques. The cleaner a site's design and the easier it is to upload, the easier it is for search engines to crawl it.
Simplicity and fast loading also applies to any images on your site.
Optimize pictures and images so that they upload as quickly as possible. Search engines favor this.
Develop a site map for all the pages of your site. This, too, makes it easier for search engine robots to find.
These are just a few of the search engine optimization strategies you can use to increase your site's visibility on the web. Helping visitors who may be interested in what you have to offer find your Web site more easily will favorably impact your business's bottom line.
