HOW TO IRRITATE YOUR SITE VISITORS
You have got a flourishing business.
Now you even have a swanky website to flaunt. What’s next? Now, let’s irritate
the life out of your site visitors and make them run away with a promise of
never to return. What? You think I am talking absurd? Well, I am only talking,
you do it every day. Don’t believe me? Read on.
It’s important for a website to be
attractive, but too much beatification works the reverse way. I always quote
the example of a model here. You can make a model look stunning with the right
makeup, but if you flood her face with layers & layers of makeup then she
is more likely to look like a lead from some horror flick. Same goes for your
website. Most people have this temptation of doing too much with the site,
which makes the audience feel an instant repulsive instinct at a mere glance of
the site.
Talking of flashy websites, let’s
ponder over flash for a minute. Everybody loves to add flash to their website.
It adds that wow factor. In the process it makes the site so heavy that there
is a longer waiting time than the evening train. It’s a perfect weapon to shoot
yourself in the foot. Make the visitors wait and wait; let them enjoy the site
of looking at that loading button fill up. And yes, adding fancy loading
buttons is only adding insult to the injury. If it can’t load in time, it’s no
good.
Then comes the content. Obviously,
you got to shout what you say. So much so that makes the visitors reach out for
ear plugs. Big, bold, italic, underline, you do everything to highlight the key
points in your site. These are the things that you really want people to read.
If that’s the case, at least leave them readable. Moreover, if these are ‘the’
points to be noted then why didn’t you put only these at the first place?
Websites are quick references, not thesis, use them the right way.
Pop up is an element that I have
never understood. Why say something in a way that flies away like a bird from
the nest. What’s wrong with good old static banners? Thankfully, most browsers
have added popup blockers leading to decline in usage of these flying squads.
Still, it’s not completely eradicated. People are hell bent to using popup to
annoy website visitors. Can’t help them.
Besides these, you will find many
other ways to irritate your website visitors, and if you want to be sensible
then view these as the ‘don’ts’ rather than the ‘dos’. Choice is yours
