What is web design and does it Matter?

At the beginning of the decade, it didn't really matter what websites look like. Competition was relatively slight in comparison with today,. People often tolerated ugly sites because the Internet was still in its infancy and people didn't know better. That has changed.
The other side of the coin is that web design companies who didn't know better got into the act and produced fabulous looking websites. However, sometimes they provided so much video content that for slower networks they didn't load and people gave up and went elsewhere. Customer lost. Also, some of the size looked absolutely beautiful but because of the way there were constructed, they would never be found by the search engines. They were beautiful but no one ever saw them.
The compromise these days is having a website that looks good enough to not repel and is attractive but loads quickly, provides the content and information rapidly that people come to it for, funnels prospective purchases of goods and services into a sales funnel and can readily found by the search engines. This ultimately is the key to good web design.
Websites must be constructed correctly at the start. This means that Google for instance is told accurately what keywords your website is about, those keywords being phrases people actually look for. Furthermore, when you add new content, Google rapidly picks up that new content and indexes it quickly so that people searching for that key phrase find your new content rapidly.
Your website must also be search engine optimized. This means that your website must have a great deal of links from other sites pointing to your website, from preferably well-regarded other sites. It is through this process that Google often ranks which websites are worthy of being ranked highly against others. This process takes time, certainly, but is essential in the modern market for making sure that Google finds and highly places your site.
Your website must also capture leads if possible. If done correctly, it doesn't matter whether or not a customer comes to your site and leaves quickly. If they have entered into your list, you can e-mail them again and again, with content but also with offers. A lead captured is a customer likely retained.
Ultimately, this compromise of style and substance will make or break your site. There is no necessary right answer to what proportions are correct. Results and experience will dictate it. If your site looks attractive, people can find it easily on Google, people do actually find it on Google and people who find your site buy your goods and services, then you have hit the optimal compromises required to show excellent web design

Re: 7 Top Blog Design Tips Re: 7 Top Blog Design Tips - You can get away with poor design if you have killer content. There's no doubt about it. But, I think at some point you should focus on the design aspect as well. As I said earlier, it can only enhance your blog. I feel there should be a good balance between the content and design.
Re: 7 Top Blog Design Tips Re: 7 Top Blog Design Tips - I have seen some very succefful blogs/website, that had traffic and were very popular and their design was the worst you ever seen. I do think the design should look good, but content is still the winner.

Re: 7 Top Blog Design Tips Re: 7 Top Blog Design Tips - I only mentioned that the design of a site should be just as important because I personally won't stay at a site very long if the design looks like "crap." I'm not very picky by any means, but it's easy to tell if a site is just thrown together or whether the person took even a small amount of time to make it somewhat appealing. If the site looks horrible, it doesn't matter how good the content is, I'll leave. That's my own personal preference, so when creating my own sites, if I don't like how something looks, I'll change it until I like it. There's a good chance that there's someone else out there that will think close to the same as me. Meaning, if I think it looks appealing, then others out there will too. Hopefully, anyway. Also keep in mind you only have so many seconds to grab their attention, and chances are that they're looking at the overall design of the site before the awesome content.
