Prevent Flooding With Sump Pumps and French Drains

If you want your basement to stay dry and keep mold problems at bay, then you will have various options at your disposal. Two of the most common options include sump pumps and French drains. Here is an introduction to these two waterproofing methods.

Basements typically have a drain in the floor to help deal with small flooding problems. However, this will not be enough if you frequently experience more severe flooding. Having a sump pump installed is a suitable option.

Sump pumps automatically engage whenever they detect the basement is flooded. They will pump water out of the basement and in a location far enough away from your home. This will keep the water from causing problems with your foundation.

You should know that most sump pumps work with the aid of electricity. If the flooding knocks out power in your home, the sump pump will not be able to run. Therefore, you should consider getting a sump pump with a battery back-up installed so it can run even when the power is out.

Sump pumps typically work in conjunction with sump crocks. In most situations, one sump crock will be enough for the average home. However, some residences may benefit from having two or three sump crocks.

Another option for protecting your basement from water is a French drain. This is basically a trench located outside your home lined with gravel or rock. The trench acts as a barrier to your foundation, and directs water to a different location.

French drains are useful for protecting against both surface and groundwater. They are commonly used in the back of homes since they often have a slope. A French drain is a very cost-effective solution for protecting your basement.

They have to make use of pipes in order to route water away. Pipes made from PVC are by far the most common. These hollow pipes also have holes in the bottom of them to help deal with ground water that accumulates.

Now you have an idea how you can help keep your basement dry if you live in an area particularly prone to flooding. Sump pumps are very useful and will engage automatically if they detect that your basement is flooded with water. Just make sure that the pump has a battery backup so it can operate if there is a power outage. You can also use French drains outside your home so water is not allowed to make its way to your foundation and seep into the basement.

Re: How many nationalities are on the forum? - Hey, Kev: I call myself Canadian ... but I can't speak French! :-[ My oldest granddaughter just started Play School (I think that's what they call it) and she is enrolled in the French Immersion class. That is great! I think it is valuable to be able to speak more than one language, and I think it also helps to stretch the mind and exercise the brain. GT :-]
Re: How many nationalities are on the forum? Re: How many nationalities are on the forum? - Hi there, It is amazing the languages have come into the posts. Now Jude was asked, how many languages she speaks. Please, come and tell us. I speak English, German and French. German is my mother tongue. Some thirty years ago I spoke fluently French. Now English has taken that place and I can better understand French than speaking it. English is now my daily used language. German in second place. However, I never grasped the German grammar very much. Why? The Swiss German Dialect is nothing to be compared with High German. At that time hardly anybody wrote the Dialect. Today it is the 'in thing' to write the dialect. (Letters, stories etc) But we have to be able to read High German, because every book, newspaper etc is in High German. Finally, I guess there are a few more who can vote for their nationality.
Christmas funnies Christmas funnies - Hi everyone, Somebody was teaching French. So in December he decided to read the Christmas story from the Bible. When they came to the part, where it reads: 'there was no room for them in the inn. In French it says: ...pas de place pour eux dans la pièce réservée aux hôtes. Somebody shouts from the classe: 'réservée'. Did Joseph make a reservation by phone? ha ha ha. Regards Beat "Unlock Peoples's Potentials!"

Re Thinking Smarter Re Thinking Smarter - Hi Tami, Thanks for the encouragement. Yesterday I had an experience, which is great. On a volunteer basis I teach French at a College of the Third Age. Often we work with a book, but one guy left it at home. We are only a small class, hence I had a new idea to find words by way of a spider web. Each word had something in common. We filled the whole flipchart with words. Just by thinking creative. Regards Beat
