Whether you are designing and building a personal website, or designing and building a website for a small, medium or a multinational company the goal is the same, you need to know that your customers are going to be able to easily search for and find your website.

There are many ways in which to find a website but mostly you would be found through one of the many search engines out there.

Tip 1 . Know your target market. The first rule of achieving a good ranking within a search engine is to consider how will my listing appear and will it appeal to my target market, will it stand out amongst the other websites that are on that results page?

The listing you create for search engines will greatly depend on what you have to offer which brings us to relevance and the density of the text on the page. For example, you wouldn't write about web site design if you were selling jewellery. You need to keep the text relevant to the product or service that you are selling or promoting as it is this text that allows the search engines to decide where in the listings your website belongs. The more relevant the text is, the higher you will be ranked. The more relevant the text is, the level and the quality of the traffic to your web site will increase.

Tip 2. Research the keywords. Identify the keywords that people are using to find your product or service as these can have a huge impact on traffic to your website. A good place to start is using Google keyword tool or Wordtracker to find keywords or phrases that are popular and relevant to your website. It is these keywords that help the search engines decide what your website is all about, meaning if your keyword is 'chocolate bar' repeated several times within that text chances are this is what your website is about. Beware, stuffing too many keywords can have an adverse effect to your website, but not having any at all is just as bad.

Tip 3. Meta tags. Whilst content of a website plays a big part on your search engine ranking, the meta tags will increase the effect. Use a short concise title with one or two keywords or phrases in. A sentence to describe your website, remember Tip 1, keywords or phrases in the title need to be relevant. Load the body text of your website with these keywords or phrases, however, remember Tip 2, you need to get the balance right. To many and too few will have an adverse effect.

3 Tips on how you can achieve good rankings within search engines, all three play a part in helping the search engines list you effectively and make you stand out from your competitors.

If you are having problems finding your website in the search engines then one or more of the above things will probably be at fault. There are many tools out there that can help you analyse your website and help you achieve good listings in the search engines.
