Web 2.0

What is Web 2.0? It is something which gained a lot of hype in the last few months, even before it actually came into existence; it was quite popular within the media and industry. It is not a single technology or stand alone framework but a whole set of enabling applied sciences that have a lot of untapped potential to design, customize and provide services meant for the end users. XML and AJAX are the technological building blocks of it. Having both technical as well as functional aspects to it that comply with the standards of the internet platform, Web 2.0 forms a part of all the modern business models. Web 1.0 had the main agenda of delivering products, was sticking to the stringent producer- consumer approach. But, with Web 2.0, the paradigm has shifted altogether. This is combined with the other user services too. It focuses on delivering services where the end user is given prime importance. The aim is to build trust and gain their confidence.

With web 2.0 model implemented in the websites, users can participate actively and give their contribution to it. This forms a rich and interactive community possessing critical mass which fosters the user’s interest in the website and the content that the page has been endorsing. Users can out rightly give their feedback by rating the content. They can also edit, tag or share it. The APIs can be used to serve as ready to use tools such as REST or SOAP services; RSS feeds in order to enable organizing and structuring the data in unique ways.

How is it relevant to social networking?

How are web 2.0 and social networking inter related. When we gaze into them, there are a lot of similarities in their technical aspects. But, if they are studies in evaluation, one may not find anything in common. These two are probably the latest buzz words that people whose life revolves around technology are talking about. Converging the paths of these technologies, we may obtain the power to bring a revolution. Together they create a room or a platform for lot of opportunities and technological innovations.

There can be meaningful strategies to integrate social networking and Web 2.0 and can come up with concrete guidelines for merging the two spheres within a company, organization or a group. Many applications formed in this genre are mainly centered on customer interaction. They aim to gain customer’s attention by the means of blogs, forums etc and disseminate the information about their product or brand and use them for driving the marketing and sales for them. Facebook and myspace pages are also used for the same purpose. AJAX is one of the technologies used in them which constantly refresh the content on the page automatically whenever there is an update. The techies who are involved into this also derive innovative ideas and strategies to raise the productivity, knowledge sharing and management, collaboration and strengthening relationship with the partners, investors and the customers or clients.
