What is the point of having a website if no-one can see it? You could have the best product in the world but if your website can not be seen, no-one will know about it.

You may be launching a new website for the first time or you may be trying to increase traffic to your site with the aim of increasing your sales figures, either way website traffic is very important to the success of any website. Below are a few ways that could help increase your web visibility.

Who is your target market? and where is your target market? Do your research. For example, if you are running a Counselling practice in Bishops Stortford, in East Herts. your target market would be clients from the local community and the surrounding area and not from across the UK or around the world! Below are a few simple ways to target visitors from your local community to visit your website.

Firstly, a good eye catching home page needs to grab a potential visitors attention, if it does not they will click off your site and on to the next site within three seconds. Secondly, it is vital to target your website at people that are looking or may be interested in what you are offering. For example, a Counsellor may place flyers/promotional literature in doctor's surgeries, health centres, hospitals etc. For your business you need to consider where to place your promotional material to attract your target market to your site, for example you may need to get some flyers in shop windows or shop notices boards, specific shops visited by customers that may also be interested in your product. If you are selling a DIY product, for example, you need to target DIY shops.

You may have a business that is not constrained to a physical location, for example, when you are solely based on the internet you have the potential of exposing and selling your products worldwide. However, for you business to be competitive in such a large and competitive arena you would need an understanding of search engine optimisation techniques. Search engine optimisation or SEO are methods that change the way that search engines see and position you in the organic search listings. This can mean the difference of a top 10 listing or a 10 millionth listing!

A good indication of how your site is performing is to visit the popular search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing etc. and look for your product or service. If the results do not reveal your company within the first three results pages chances are very few people will ever find you.

You will need to learn a lot about SEO and internet marketing strategies to do well in the search engines and there are many tutorials on the internet to get you started. However, it can be far more cost effective to hire an SEO professional that will take care of this side of your online business for you allowing you to focus on what you do best.

To conclude, if you are not getting the traffic your business needs, you should start with effective promotional strategies to bring in more website traffic to your site, that will convert into sales for your business. Remember if you have a local business, promote locally and if you are looking to a larger if not worldwide market either learn as much as you can about SEO or hire a professional who knows how to make your business competitive in such a competitive arena.
