Optimisation Of A Website

Optimisation of a website requires a varied and ever changing set of tactics and strategies. Generally your home or index page is the first page that a visitor may see and needs to be punchy to engage the attention of the visitor but also search engine friendly to gain a high ranking in the organic or free search engine listings. There are many ways that this can be achieved by the simplest of changes that would have a dramatic effect on their websites placement.
Editing “ALT” tags is often overlooked when designing a web page. By using the ALT tag you can name all the images on your website with relevant keywords thus making it easier for search engine spiders to crawl your site and to increase the relevance of the page which would serve to increase your rank in the organic listings.
Let us for argument sake say that you sold flowers and you name your images as “flower 1” it would have little or no impact in influencing your rankings but by naming it as “long stem red rose” then it would be relevant to the product and the page content which would only serve you a better place in the organic listings. When editing and optimising images for your website using a program like Photoshop, try and keep a balance between quality and image size because a slow loading page is likely to lose a visitor as the average time you have to hold someone’s attention is around three seconds. Some visitors don’t even wait for the page to load before leaving a website. So keep pages fast and get the important information across as quickly as possible.
If you imagine your webpage as a newspaper, it’s not the stories that grab your attention. Newspapers use headlines to navigate you through the articles and information quickly as you would on a webpage. Using headline text, making important text bold, bullet pointing are all ways to grab attention not only for the visitor but the search engine spiders that crawl your site.
Put navigation links on the bottom of your sites pages too. Very useful if you have pages where users need to scroll down a long ways.
Try and keep your website concise and punchy keeping it relevant to what you are promoting but do keep it visitor friendly. The old saying “content is king” still applies, so keep your pages fresh with up to date content and as unique as possible to give it more kudos with the search engines.
Try to avoid using too many scripts that are unnecessary like background music or background animations that can be incredibly annoying or even tacky for visitors.
The main topic on people’s minds is choosing the right keywords. It is better to choose key phrases rather than single words. Start by thinking of ten to twelve key phrases that you think would help people find your website. For example say that you are selling flowers in Hertfordshire you wouldn’t use the keyword “flowers”. So making the key phrase to say “florist Hertfordshire” or maybe “long stem roses Hertfordshire” so as to make it relevant to someone searching. This also increases the chance of a sale because it drills the search down to something specific.
Your description tag should also contain some keywords and should be no longer than twenty five to thirty words. This is the information that shows up in searches. So keep in mind your title and try and continue the same keywords into your description but don’t overdo it. So if you saw a website listed in the search engines that had a title of “flowers” or one that said “long stem roses Hertfordshire” what one are you more likely to click on?
Make sure that you don’t have any dead or broken links as this can irritate visitors and doesn’t look good to the search engines when they crawl your site. There are many free online link checkers you can use.
In conclusion to Optimising Your Website, I would like to remind you to keep your sites free of useless add-ons that aren’t used, keep it relevant, fresh and make the navigation as simple as possible.
