What are paid links?

When it comes to increasing or enhancing your ranking in the search engine(s), paid links do play their role. A paid link is attributed by a nofollow link. This link implies a instruction to Google, not to pass the vote or a Page Rank. Further, you are revoking a user's right to vote on it.

People buy these links against a fee which have a high rating or a Page Rank that complement and perfectly fit in the context of their website. Additionally, they also use the anchor text that they desire. However, they do not mention or specify it openly on their web page making it too obvious or evident to the user. They do not opt for the web services or forums to declare them. Instead, they contact the web masters on a one to one basis and request for the purchase.

Paid links can also down grade the web page's rating or Page Ranking. But despite of knowing the cons, people are still opting for them and they use it to out rank the other websites. So, if you are willing to give a boost to your business website and open the doors to welcome opportunities, you have to prepared to take a risk. It is purely a matter of choice. An important thing that one has to be aware is that it is hampering the performance efficiency and is also responsible for diluting and deteriorating the quality of the search results.

Detecting and Reporting the Paid Links

The paid links are a potential threat to Google's guidelines pertaining to their defined standards for search and they penalize the ones who attempt to violate it. Users who come across spam or low-quality sponsored links can report it to the Google webmaster and sign in to fill up an authentic report and submit details of the link. The robust and scalable algorithms designed to fight against spam content can easily detect such links and it is up to Google's discretion to take the relevant action against them, as it is totally against people believing that money is the prime factor to influence and improve upon their search engine rating.

In some cases, the paid links do have a strategic importance to them, so there are a few exceptional cases which are exempted from being treated as spam. They are usually distinguished by the keywords in their anchor text.

In case your Page Rank has slipped down by a few points as a result of action taken against your paid links, you still have a scope to revert it. You can submit a request application for reconsideration to Google. First and foremost you will have to stop indulging in buying or selling the links. Secondly, you need to declare it on a public forum proclaiming discontinuity on selling PR and the changes that you have done. Third, add a nofollow attribute to all the paid links on your website.

The more widespread and clear your message is, the chances of getting back your PR over the time get better and the penalty is revoked.
