The importance of design in a web application is indisputable. The first thing to get noticed is the design. A design which enriches the user experience of surfing the website holds inevitable significance. The web designer should put themselves in the shoes of actual users and keep in consideration their expectations, then design the layout accordingly. There are not any specific guidelines to adhere to, in order to make a 'perfect design' but some practices which are good to follow

Do not mix the content with presentation elements or java script Usually, the markup language being used, say HTML code is the content and CSS determines how it is going to be rendered. Both of them should not be written together. There should be a separate files for CSS. Inline CSS is absolutely not encouraged. Not only it is affecting the modularity of the application, but will also impact its maintenance.

Similarly, if java script is being used specific to some actions then the code should be written at the end of file. The reason behind this is that by default, the JS loads first and the content gets rendered after it.

Fluidity in the Design

A responsive design is the latest buzzword in web designing these days. People are swiftly switching their media from PC's and laptops the applications are also being developed to be hosted on Ipad, mobile phones, tablets etc. So an ideal design should not be bounded with fixed widths and margins, it should be adaptive and flexible enough to be fit into any medium. Another thing, the designer should also not make any assumptions about the user's browser.

Do not over board the page

The designer should make the web page attractive and captivating. The fancy images, animations and videos that they intend to use should be appropriately placed, relevant to the context and optimized in terms of memory consumption and the time they take to get loaded. Including unnecessary pompous and jazzy pictures or multimedia elements in the application are a distraction for the user.

Validate Your Application It is not possible to exhaustively test the web site, but, validating it against the users requirements and specifications is essential. From the inception of the website, the validation process should begin. It should follow is well defined work flow. Re doing or fixing the problem areas can be very time consuming and expensive at later stages. Inculcating the different checks and imposing conditions can ensure that it will not fail. Its response to the inputs should also be verified.

W3C markup-validation is a service which does validation free of cost. It works as a debugger and helps the developer to locate and fix the code which is causing bugs.

Locate the error prone places

If there are some loopholes in the design, emphasis should be laid on the places where the propensity of errors is high. It is the responsibility of the designer that the user does not get stuck and should have an idea about what went wrong in the application. In that case, it becomes important to design the simple and informative error pages so that the user can know what is he supposed to do next.
