Web application design and a GUI design, are intangible entities which are interactive in nature. Designing a web application uses a different approach as compared to designing a conventional user interface. The primary focus of a web designer is making a user oriented interface and give them the complete control over it. The responsibility is jointly shared with the hardware or software being used at the client’s end. A lot of aspects which separate them, need to be kept into consideration.
The diversity of devices
For a design meant for a GUI application, the design should be the exact replica of what you intend to show on the user’s screen. The designer is aware of the individual units on the user’s device and accordingly, every pixel on the screen has to be controlled and fixed. The web designer cannot rely on any assumptions. Users can access the internet through any device, running on any operating system and host it on any web browser. The look and feel is completely different on each medium specific to the dimensions and other characteristics of the device.
Consistency
Consistency is given prime importance in a GUI application. This enables the users to utilize the knowledge of concepts acquired from one source to be used into the other application. Whereas, the scenario for a web application is completely different. Here, more emphasis is laid upon the isolated identity of the application. The consistency constraints are imposed using technologies like Java, JavaScript and HTML.
Integration
Interoperability providing the capabilities of importing- exporting and seamless integration into any platform are one of the key directives in a toolkit provided by GUI. They are expected to support the operations that can be performed on a clipboard, like copy-paste or cut-paste
Integration with respect to a website holds a different relevance. It is majorly concerned with the navigation controls, printing etc. A website is supposed to be dynamic in nature, interoperability among the sites is something which is not expected implicitly from a web application.
Security concerns
In a GUI environment, the security factor is something that should be tightly controlled. Trusted sources and users should be authenticated to have the access to the application. Security specific to the computer system running the utility and the network security have to be taken care of.
The web application is prone to many types of attacks and threats which are usually not anticipated by the developers and even after an application has been successfully launched, there would be some major or minor security loopholes that would creep up.
Navigation
For a GUI design, the navigation is entirely controlled by the web designer. The menu options, buttons, links etc. can be disabled or enabled based on the state of the application. Alert boxes or messages in a pop up box can be triggered on the occurrence of a particular action.
On the contrary, the users of a web application are completely set free and can completely control or tweak the navigation flow. The designer cannot specify or restrict the user within a work flow or a path to be followed. The users can directly land up to the page they want to visit or bookmark it to create their own customized interface, without following any path.
