Website designing is creating usable web page(s) for the users. It is a collaborative effort of the Web designer and a web developer. Often, people use these terms interchangeably, but the role of the two entities is different in the application development life cycle and undoubtedly, inevitable too.

Developer's role

A website developer's role comes into the engineering aspect. Their role is to control the back end provide functionality to the application. They have to code at the server side (web-server)for processing and the client side (web-browser) for hosting the content. A web developer should have sound knowledge of server side scripting technologies and frameworks such as VBScript, PHP, Python etc. over the years, Java has been the most popular choice of the web application developers. It is equally important for them to be proficient in the client side technologies like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, DOM etc. and should be up-to-date in database handling and management as well. Online applications are vulnerable to many threats, attacks and hacking, It is the duty of web developers to keep security checks and safeguard their application.

Designer's responsibilities

A web designer’s job is to coherently put together the designing principles and give the application, a defined structure and present it well. They design the interface through which the user is going to interact and navigate through the contents of the web site. They are also known as the usability analyst because in the web application development team, they are the best critiques to judge the semantics of the web pages. The other responsibilities of a web designer include meetings and interactions with the clients to understand their explicit as well as implicit requirements, taste preferences and the purpose of the website they want to be developed. Then the web designer has to do the brainstorming and work out a theme which fits the best and think of the strategies which will provide an ultimate experience of usability and delight the users. They have to create or find graphics, pictures and other multimedia within a well formed and structure design template. The design template can be their own creativity or taken from the internet as there are host of options available to choose from at different websites.

The next step is to prepare the technology stack that they will be implementing to create the designs. The web designer should spend some time in exploring and fiddling with the new technologies that have been released in the recent times. This might give them interesting ideas to be included in the application design and can also make their work easier. They should be flexible enough in their mindset to be able to switch and adapt to the other alternatives in technology

It is essential for both, the web developers and the designers to establish the set of ground rules and specifications that they are going to follow while designing each module of the web site and adhere to it. They should be formulated, keeping in consideration the customer's requirements and expectations too. This will ensure consistency and uniformity in the web application.
