HTML – Backbone of the Web
HTML is the backbone of Internet. The web world revolves around it. It is easy, fast and fascinating. HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup language. Designers love playing with HTML. It is their bread and butter. Tim Berners-Lee developed this language in the early ‘90s. Later, IETF developed it further for web designing purposes. Today, W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) maintains and promotes HTML. It is a part of the international standards. HTML is an easy and simple language that can be understood and learn easily. Here we list some of the major aspects of this language.
HTML creates the markup (structure) of a web page. Web pages with HTML coding have a ‘.html’ or ‘.htm’ extension. It comprises of tags that enclose text, links and images. These tags do not show up themselves but only the content inside them. Tags possess attributes to modify them according to the requirement. Tags are of two types- container and empty tags. Container tags are in pairs and contain text between them. Empty tags are functional in character. The most important tags one must know are html, head, title, meta, body, div, br, table, em, h1, h2, etc. The important attributes for these tags are – class, id, style, title, etc.
HTML is a globally accepted language. The entire web structure comprises of HTML. Most of the web technologies support HTML and create products to enhance its programming. Most of the web designing IDEs and editors support this language. HTML results in static web pages that cannot interact with users. However, you can merge HTML with many languages and technologies to create dynamic web pages. You can view an HTML page on any browser on any computer. It is a platform independent language. The best thing is that it does not require any plug in or software either for development or for rendering. You can code HTML on a simple word processor like the Notepad.
Today HTML comes with new features in a robust packaging called HTML5. This new generation is full of advanced manipulation and storage features. It has the power to replace Flash based technologies and is becoming the first choice all over. You can move to HTML5 for better , faster and much reliable results.
