Key Factors that Ensure Result-Oriented Graphic Design for Websites

Graphic design is an inherent part of website design without which a website would look bland and unattractive. From background images and button controls to the theme, colour schemes and typography, everything has to be taken care of to ensure an attractive website design.

An effective graphic design adds visual appeal, professionalism and usability to the website. Attractive graphics play a significant role in stimulating the aesthetic sense of the visitors and compelling them to take a positive action on the site. While graphic design is an art, it should also convey a message or should complement the website design and enhance the performance of the site.

Some of the key factors related to graphic design that ensures successful website design are discussed below:

Integration of different aspects of design (shape, size, line, direction, colour and texture)- All these factors determine the visual character of the design. When implemented in a website, these factors ensure that the site not only looks visually appealing but is also presented in an organised manner.

Density of graphic elements- The quality of a website can be spoiled by overuse of graphic design, no matter how good the design is. Excessive use of graphic elements makes the web pages look cluttered and non-appealing to the visitors. Thus, the elements should be used with perfect balance of design and utility.

Selection of colours- Right colour combination plays a key role in enhancing the graphics and the content on the web pages. Different types of colours have different effects on visitor sensibility and they should be used accordingly. For instance, colours like red, yellow and orange are eye-catchy and should be used to highlight prominent sections or buttons, such as the call-to-action. Moreover, the designer should ensure that consistency is maintained throughout the use of colours on the website so that uniformity can be maintained.

Typography- All the efforts you make on the website design, the graphics or the content can go in vain if the text on the site is unreadable to the visitors. The kind of typography used in the website should highlight what is written as the content on the site and should make it readable for the visitors.

When used effectively, graphic design can bring along several benefits to the website:

  1. Grabs attention- When you buy a phone or a car or anything for that matter, the first thing that you notice is the looks and the visual appeal of that object. Similarly, the way your website looks to a person determines whether he would visit the site. Therefore, if you have invested in effective graphic design, you can get greater attention from your target audience as compared to your competitors.

  2. Leaves a lasting impact- Good images, colourful design and catchy images allows visitors to recall your brand every time they see them or hear about them. Effective graphic design allows visitors to differentiate your website from the rest of them and reach out to you directly.

  3. Builds a positive and professional image- High-quality graphics can create a positive image of the website and the business. If you invest in quality people will find your business reliable and credible enough to work with. A loose graphic design only shows the lack of seriousness and determination of the business owner. On the other hand, superior graphics indicate how much efforts the business owner has made to ensure premium user experience.

  4. Increases sales- When your visitors are happy with your website and find it interesting, they will also be willing to purchase your products/services and improve the conversion rate and sale leads. When the sales of your products/services improve because of the graphic design and website design, you are able to get return on investment and see your revenue growing.

  5. Creates goodwill- When you are part of a highly competitive market, even your small efforts towards improving customer service and relations can leave a big impact on your business and market share. Effective graphic design helps in building strong goodwill for the business that leads to customer loyalty and retention.

Your Riskiest Business Decision Your Riskiest Business Decision - Greetings All I was just thinking about my own Graphic Design business and how I've made risky decisions in the past. One of these decisions involved taking on a long term, full time contract at the expense of losing new and existing clients for the next 2 years, as well as having to satisfy existing clients on the weekends. Would the contract kill my entire freelance business after 2 years? Would it be worth it? As I'm nearing the end of the 2 year contract and I would have to say that it's paid off. This is because I managed to run my own business on the side (weekends) to retain most of my existing clients so when/if I decide to go back to full time freelancing I won't have to start from the beginning again. In saying this I would like to know of any risky business decisions that you have made and whether it paid off or not? My 2 year contract decision did pay off but I also lost two good clients because I did not have the time to efficiently satisfy their requests.

Re: what position to request? Re: what position to request? - Hi Michael, Great suggestion from David, or you could try something around a design consultancy, How about Website Design Consultant, Design and Development Manager, Website Support and Development Manager or maybe Internet Business Development Consultant. Ultimately whatever you are comfortable with and good luck for the future, Mal.
