What you got will make you money
What you got will make you money
One of my first real businesses was the snow shoveling business when I was 11 years old. My best friend Randy and I would rush home from school every winter afternoon, grab our snow shovels, we lived in central Pennsylvania where it snowed a lot, and shovel a few walks for 50’ each. That was big money for a couple of 11 year olds.
One winter it did not snow in Central Pennsylvania. It was cold enough to snow but no snow. As Randy and I stood on the corner by his house, with our snow shovels waiting for the snow to come, a car turned the corner and started up the slight hill in front of us. Although there was no snow on the road there was a bit of ice from the participation in the air. As the driver of the car spun his wheels in front of us he rolled down his window and said, "Boys if you push me up this hill I will give you 50’." We dropped our shovels and in seconds we made as much money as it usually took us 2 hours to earn. We had a new business. That day before dark we each earned $4.00.
The next day we rushed back to the corner to earn more money. But the cinder truck had come by. Back then to combat ice on the roads the city had a guy shoveling cinders out of the back of a dump truck on to the ice. The city put us out of business. Then I remembered what I always heard my father say, "Use what you got."
We had snow shovels, we shoveled those cinders right off the road and we were back in business. For the next week, by using what we got and shoveling the cinders off the road each day the city put them there, Randy and I continued to make more money in one day than we usually made in a whole winter of shoveling snow.
Then one day there was no ice on the road, no water vapor in the air to form ice. We were out of Business. But wait,
Use what you got. There was Randy's house and hanging on Randy's house was Right . A garden hose. We wet that road right down and we were back in business.
We continued to wet the road down each afternoon until the C.O.P. came by. Boy was he mad. We were out of business again.. The rest of the story can not be put in print to protect the innocent.
Two 11 year old boys made a lot of money that winter by using what they got.

I learned a long time ago, I was eleven years old. It was a real long time ago, that to make money all I have to do is use what I got. Perhaps because it was easier than creating new marketing and selling techniques and because I always remember what my father use to say.
