Which Did You Do - Lose Your Temper or Self-Confidence
Think back to a recent conversation you were in,
A difficult conversation, one in which you either lost
Your temper or self-confidence - or both.
Think back to a recent meeting you attended
In which other participants either lost
Their temper or their self-confidence - or both.
Do you know that when we lose our temper or our self-confidence,
We are not capable of learning anything new.
Robert Frost tells us why:
"Education is the ability to listen to almost anything
Without losing our temper or our self-confidence."
In the midst of an epidemic of broken marriages,
Violence in schools, increasing teenage suicides
Most of us don't know how to develop our ability to listen
So we can resolve conflicts and build relationships.
Do you know that we spend 45% of each day listening
And only 5% of us have ever taken a practice course in listening.
Do you realize that means 95% of parents and teachers
Do not know how to listen to our children particularly at a time of stress.
Will Rogers sums up the problem this way:
"The trouble with people is not what they know.
It's what they know that ain't so."
Chances are if we believe we know how to listen,
It probably ain't so!
Often in a workshop I ask people to describe the five fundamentals of listening.
Most people remain quiet or respond "eye contact" or "nodding my head",
Neither of which is a fundamental of listening.
Yet ask any average golfer who doesn't even practice or take lessons
What the fundamentals of a golf swing are and they readily respond,
"Balanced stance, elbows straight, weight on balls of the feet, knees slightly bent..."
After our next conversation in which we lose our temper or self-confidence,
We might want to ask ourselves "What new ideas/information did I learn?
Did I use any of the 5 fundamentals of listening.
