How are You Dealing with Apparent Sales Success Failures?
There is only one way to fail and that is to quit, so everything that doesn’t work out short of quitting is just an apparent failure. You need to learn how to effectively deal with the apparent failures so you can get to the sales success you want. Understanding how you’re currently responding to those apparent failures will help you identify the behaviors you want to change. When faced with an apparent defeat you can: get angry, pretend it never happened and everything is fine, avoid doing the things that put you in a position to experience another apparent failure, make excuses about what happened, or blame other people for the experience. These are all the ways you don’t want to respond.
Apparent failures are diamonds in the rough in your sales business. If you never experienced these apparent failures you’d never have an opportunity to become a truly great sales producer because you’d never learn what it takes to get really good. But there are positive responses that help you grow and develop, and there are negative responses that keep you stuck where you are.
Top producers have tremendous self-control. When you get angry you’re giving up control of yourself to someone or something else. You can’t control other people you can only control yourself. Part of self-control is recognizing you and only you are responsible for every experience you have. So, if you didn’t have the experience you wanted look to yourself to figure out why and what you can do to obtain a different experience next time.
You can’t continue your sales learning curve if you stop doing the things you have to do to get sales. When parts of the process aren’t working you have to figure out how to make them work. Stopping them doesn’t provide you with solutions it just makes you more fearful about your next experience because you magnify the experience in your mind convincing yourself a positive outcome isn’t possible.
You get the results you expect and the results you’ve earned. You can’t earn the results of a top sales producer if you aren’t willing to do the things you need to do to get there. You have to: view every apparent failure as a learning opportunity and make the appropriate adaptations and changes, accept full and total responsibility for what happened, choose the next appropriate action and have the self-control and self-leadership required to follow through on that action, and commit to continuous professional development.
