How You Can Overcome Fear
Fear holds us back from accomplishing a lot of things. In my seminars and workshops, when I ask the audience what are some the fears they face in their profession, the answers are pretty typical.
"Rejection"
"Failure"
"Being fired"
"Not hitting quota"
"Not making enough money"
"Cold calling"
"Not enough clients"
And the list goes on.
To have fear is to be human. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having fear. Fear is supposed to make us more aware of the situation. Is it important to overcome fear? Absolutely!
I was born in Singapore and served six years in the military as an officer. After boot camp, they sent me to Officer Candidate School, a grueling 9-month course. The instructors there were called mentors. We all know what a mentor is, right? Well, at age 17, I didn't know what a mentor was. One of the goals of the mentors was to draw out our fears and weaknesses and help us overcome them. They were really, really good at this. They were so good that I figured out what "mentor" really stood for; "mental torture".
One of the exercises was we had a two storey tower. It looked like the Eiffel tower, except it was only two stories high. The exercise dictated that we had to jump off the tower and land on our feet in a canvass sheet being held by our buddies down below.
So we ran up the tower and I was the fourth or fifth person up there. When it was my turn, I stepped up to the edge and looked down. That's when I realized I was afraid of heights. I let everyone else go past me and pretty soon, I was the last one. Not a good place to be in.
All of a sudden all of the attention was on me. The mentors started yelling at me and threatening me. After 15 minutes of suffering the abuse, I finally jumped.
I made it! I was ecstatic! I had overcome my fear of heights!
But what happened next is the real lesson. I was made to go up and jump again, and again, and again all by myself. I jumped another 30 times in the next 45 minutes.
Was I still afraid of heights?
Yes, but you know what... It was because of that exercise that I was able to jump out of a plane 52 times.
You see, to me, courage is not the absence of fear, it's in spite of it.
