Sales Tip: Selling Yourself By being different

I have always been an advocate for being different in business. The risky path is the one that everyone else travels. Being middle of the road, conventional and conformist is actually a very risky place to be. Being different is a fantastic place to be with your business if you can find and dominate a position that means something for your prospective clients/customers.

Is being different for the sake of being different good enough?

Absolutely not.

I recently got a young salesperson in one of my client companies to research media buying and production agencies for a project my client was undertaking. Before I tell you the key thing that stands out for me as a result of that research let me first make a confession. The media and agency world is an alien environment for me. I understand traceable return on investment, clear articulation of why some one should buy or engage with us , and a simple to understand message. None of these things have I ever really felt that I could understand or get when large media agencies got involved.

After about two days of reviewing websites to compile a list the young guy looked up and said:

"Man these companies are all the same. On every single web site they all say they are different and then they all give the same reasons for being different!"

I nearly fell off my chair with laughter. He had a point. The agenicies live in a world where everyone is striving to be seen as different and creative. Thei attempts at convincing people they are different have all become so bland and futile that their very efforts are making them just like every other company in the Industry.

Check out what you are saying in your business?

Are you truly different? Do people understand why and do they value the difference you are promoting?
