Energy is the Edge

Expensive cars, lavish yachts, dream houses, or world class travel-none of these bring much satisfaction if you don't have your health. You don't want to be the richest person in the graveyard. Your career longevity begins with your health. Working long hours is the norm for top business people, but your body will not make the haul if you don't take care of it.

The good news is that taking care of your body now builds an energy reserve that helps your body cope with "crunch time" demands. A well-stocked energy reserve can fend off insomnia, headaches, chronic fatigue, ulcers, or even heart attacks. Your career and personal longevity both depend to a large extent on how full you keep your energy reserve.

Energy is a major passion of mine. I've spent a lot of time, research, and personal testing to determine what works to raise energy and what doesn't. Many clients who have hired our firm to train their group told me later that they hired me partially because they liked my incredibly high energy. I'm going to share with you what works for me and what I've seen many other healthy, successful business leaders practice. Keep in mind that I'm only a peak performance doctor, not a medical doctor, so please get medical advice if you need to before following my health suggestions. Here are my tips:

Sleep. This one is obvious. Sleep seven to nine hours per night, depending on your particular needs. Mind-body authority Deepak Chopra reminds us that restful sleep recharges and reinvigorates every system of the body. Sleep repairs worn cells and creates new ones.

Drink up. Drink plenty of water. Divide your weight by two to determine approximately how many ounces of water you need per day. Being even 2 percent dehydrated will radically reduce the energy reserve you have to draw from.

Aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise is the single best technique for building an energy reserve I have found. If there is a fountain of youth-and there isn't-this would be it. The 75 trillion cells in your body need three basic things: oxygen, a way to eliminate toxic waste from your cells and bloodstream, and nutrition (including water). Oxygen allows the energy-producing workers of the cells, the mitochondria, to do their work. Aerobic exercise gets the heart beating faster, which increases the amount of oxygen sent to the cells. It also causes you to sweat, which clears toxins from your cells. In addition, aerobic exercise releases endorphins, which are natural stress relievers (stress is a huge energy robber for most people) and antidepressants. Aerobic exercise also conditions the body to draw from its reserve when needed, like for an important sales call or disciplining a child. Learning to breathe properly also increases your oxygen levels and energy. I recommend three to five days per week of aerobic exercise, even if it's just walking. Drop the remote control and get out the door!

Resistance training. Strong muscles will make you look better, feel better, exude more confidence, increase energy, and improve your health. If you want to move like a champion, gesture like a champion, walk like a champion, then you must emanate the energy and power of a champion. After age 30, you begin to lose muscle at the rate of approximately 1 percent per year. Resistance training also maintains your bone mass, which helps prevent osteoporosis and broken bones. Research shows that people of any age can add muscle. I recommend one and a half to three sessions per week, depending on your current fitness condition and goals.

Flexibility. Flexibility improves energy and power, both physically and psychologically, and gives you complete access to your energy. Develop a daily stretching plan. Try yoga or Pilates, which will increase both strength and flexibility.

Nutrition. To increase your energy reserve, you must make sure that all your cells get the nutrition they need. Follow these guidelines to raise energy levels:
- Eliminate excess caffeine, alcohol, processed sugar, meat, and fast food, which all lower your energy reserve.
- Consume more fruit, vegetables, and fresh vegetable juice each day.
- Eat breakfast daily.
- Eat consistently through the day.
- Alkalize your diet by ingesting vegetable juices, green drinks, water, or alkaline-rich food sources.
- Add appropriate nutritional supplements or vitamins to your diet.

Follow these tips consistently-you will create a powerful energy reserve to draw from, and you will enjoy greater health, achievement, and prosperity!

Re: Will North America make carbon taxes anytime soon? Re: Will North America make carbon taxes anytime soon? - Well I recently started to work at a solar company in Ontario, and business is booming. The Ontario government is doing a great deal since passing the Green Energy Act. This is where the government is buy the energy you produce. 80 cents for kwh. A lot of people in Ontario are putting up solar panels on their roofs, and feeding back the grid green energy.

Re: Offline Marketing V/S Online Marketing Re: Offline Marketing V/S Online Marketing - [quote="samin":1dlwh4yc]I have heard that there are multinational companies which are spending several thousand DOLLARs each month on their online promotion. Take for example companies like expedia are spending around > $50,000/month on their Pay per click Google/Yahoo ( I just read this somewhere, although not sure). However, I would like to know whether a travel related business can benefit more from online marketing, offline marketing, or equally from both.[/quote:1dlwh4yc] Hi Samin, When I was working at Direct Energy, I think a co-worker of mine told me that the company spent approx. $300,000 to have a banner on the side of the ice rink in the Air Canada Centre for a Toronto Maple Leaf playoff game a few years back. That makes $50,000/month for online marketing seem like nothing, haha. In regards to your question, I think a travel related business will benefit most from online marketing with SEO tactics since people primarily look for cheap flights on the web. Furthermore, having good word of mouth is important as well. Speaking from personal experience, I'll tend to ask my friends and family where they've recently booked a cheap flight rather than go to the local shopping mall's flight booking centers.
Re: HOw to market a B2B consulting company Re: HOw to market a B2B consulting company - How about providing a white paper on Common security holes (only mention the ones that the prospect can easily and inexpensively fix themselves). Towards the end explain that there are other greater security flaws that exist and that you provide a "Free Security Consultation and Report". They could use this report to get cheaper quotes but you are getting so much more... you get face time with the company and get to build rapport with them. I know of a company here in Toronto that does Energy Audits on your home and provide you with a report on ways you can save energy- they also also offer to fix it for you through their suppliers. they had a story run on them on Earth Day this year and they were bombarded with over 200 calls in one day to have these audits done. The audits are done for free. You could write up a shocking story on Security and holes that exist within businesses today and submit this story to the newspapers business edition or to a Trade Magazine written for the industry you are trying to serve. Most journalists may pick up this article and feature it or interview you directly. Also, I would redesign your site to be more Information-based to educate potential prospects (how to solve common security issues) rather than it being all about the company - people are more interested in solving their problem and often aren't searching the internet for a particular company by name unless it is well established. So give them juicy information freely. note: When I first heard this idea of giving away free information about solving a problem I was hesitant to use it in my web design business. I gave it a try anyways and the amazing part was that even the easy inexpensive things I advised them they could fix in their websites they offered to pay me to do it for them - from there I was able to upsell them on greater improvements. I've since sold this company - but it was fun!
