House Arrest
Written by: Gary SilvermanArticle Overview: More and more companies are sub-contracting their work. You’ve probably heard about people being laid off from their employer only to be hired back as a sub. These are interesting times. This can be a win win. Employers may have individuals who are only 70% productive yet they are paying for 40 hours of work. Many talented individuals are wasting their time sitting around an office cubicle with nothing to do. Once they are free to work from their home they can prospect for business from other companies, something they could not do while working full time. This may actually improve their income. The company benefits because now they can react to the cycle of business better controlling their expenses and profitability. Don’t you wish you could do that with excess inventory?

Another benefit is the ability to contract with the best people for your specific job. Your sub contractors can telecommute and transmit their work to your “office”. A friend of mine does voice over work for commercials. He is highly regarded so you all have probably heard him on T.V and radio. Recently he branched out to do Video game dubs. The employer is in Singapore and they send him the script and an idea of the type of accent they need for each line. He does a portion of the script and subs out other voice talent from around the world, people he has never met but auditions their work online. He gathers all of the talent, they upload their work to him and he produces the final copy for the account in Singapore. How efficient is that? He revels in the fact that he can work in the middle of the night where it’s afternoon in England while wearing his pajamas.
How can your company change to take advantage of this new world order? As this progresses, businesses can rent or build smaller offices, there will be less traffic on the roads, greater energy efficiency, less capital expenditure for equipment, lower personnel benefit expenses, fewer names to remember, better parking, greater productivity and higher quality work. You need to seriously view all of the individuals working for you and determine whether you are a candidate for this transition. This may also be an inexpensive way to grow your business. Either way, it’s worth the time to evaluate. I wrote this while sitting in my office at home. I’m a believer.
