In most offices people tend to have fixed height desks. This means that laying your workstation out correctly in order to avoid aches and pains is a must.

The Health and Safety [Display Screen] Regulations 1992 seeks to minimise the inherent risks. These can include:
• Eye strain
• Neck strain
• Upper Limb disorders in arms, elbows, wrists and fingers
• Fatigue and stress

Everyone [not just secretarial staff] who habitually uses a VDU as a significant part of their normal job must be risk assessed to comply with the above regulation.

NO organisation is exempt.

Employees could take legal action if you have not made adequate assessment of their Health & Safety risks.

DSE Risk Assessments not only reduce the likelihood of developing WRULD’s [work related upper limb disorder] and RSI [repetitive strain injury] but also other common work related absences such as back pain, migraine and stress.

For all companies the regulations are mandatory and require Risk Assessments to be completed by a competent person, the findings recorded, the individuals involved informed and appropriate remedial action undertaken and appraised.

Although making sure that your staff is protected whilst using display screen equipment is a legal requirement, it can also be an investment which will improve the efficiency and profitability of your organisation.

The DSE Regulations require employers to:
• Analyse display screen work to assess and reduce risks
• Ensure workstations meet minimum requirements for the equipment, related furniture, environment and software.
• Plan work so there are breaks or changes in activity
• Provide eye and eyesight tests for display screen users who request them
• Provide special spectacles if the test shows these are necessary for the work and that normal spectacles cannot be used.
• Provide appropriate health and safety training and information for users.

It is in the best interest of any professional organisation to ensure they seek Independent, impartial advice that will ensure existing resources are fully utilised and additional costs that might be incurred are absolutely necessary.

Equipment leasing Equipment leasing - Equipment leasing has many benefits, such as tax benefits, conserving money and always having up to date equipment to stay competative to name a few. Obviously, it's partially dependent upon what type of business you have as to whether you will benefit more than someone else but... Do you think it's worth leasing your equipment rather than purchasing it? Can you think of any other reasons you can benefit from it or any reasons this is not a good idea?

Re: If It Ain't Broke... - [quote="mphcoach":1267m13e] Sometimes, changing a thing like the name or (my favorite) the logo (at enormous cost, way too often), is easier than looking inside at what might not be working as well as in the past. [/quote:1267m13e] In this case, they were forced to change the name, because the guy's long-term companion owns the rights to the mag, and wouldn't let them use the title. Indeed, he's upset that they're calling it Scarlet, and it's certainly true that any long-time readers of the mag may see that first "Scarl"... and think, oh, it's Scarlet Street.... when actually it's a new mag (for all that it's worked on by the same people as Scarlet Street, except for the publisher/editor who founded it.) What's even funnier, 2 of the 3 guys who are the publishing/editing triumverate - who post about this on a certain messageboard - have said that they don't care for the name - they just couldn't think of anything better! I could think of dozens of better names.... Scarlet Screen, Scarlet Scream, Frankly Scarlet, and so on... Frankly, I don't hold out much hope for the mag...
