Coaches will often describe themselves in certain ways, probably in the hope that by describing themselves in a certain way that potential clients will differentiate them. An 'NLP Coach', for example, who has had a certain level of NLP training, will have certain attitudes, knowledge, skills and coaching models that define them as an 'NLP Coach'. If you understand what NLP is you will know more about what an NLP Coach can do for you and it may help you to decide to enquire about their services.
The Philosophy or Overall Approach
You may hear a coach describe themselves as an "NLP Coach", or a "Christian Life Coach". Some coaches approach their coaching from the perspective of a lifestyle choice or a philosophy. If conformance with that choice is important to you this could be a factor when you choose a life coach.
There are also different styles of coaching that coaches adopt, such as 'directive' or 'collaborative'. 'Directive' coaches are more likely to tell you what to do. It may feel like a directive coach is 'doing it to you', or 'doing it for you'.
'Collaborative' coaches will work with you, and coach you to come up with your own answers and course of action, by asking you questions that support your own thinking process. It is more likely to feel like a collaborative coach is 'doing it with you'.
The Environment
Different coaching styles can be appropriate for different environments or situations. Although there are almost always varying degrees of overlap, coaching at work usually has a different focus and priorities from general life coaching, which is different from coaching to address a specific difficulty or problem area. Here are some examples of different coaching environments:
Life Coaching - coaching that looks across all areas of your life to improve your general well being and sense of purpose. Life coaching can help you get your life on track, improve work/life balance, or help you make personal changes in your perspective and level of satisfaction with your life. Life Coaching looks at each aspect of your life that is important to you. These could be: family, work, relationships, health, fitness, finances, life/work balance, spirituality, having fun, personal growth, hobbies and interests, or anything else that is important to you.
Performance Coaching - can have a lot of cross-over with life coaching and other types of coaching and mainly approaches coaching from the aspect of work performance.
Business Coaching. A Business Coach is usually someone with relevant skills, expertise and experience in the business sector or discipline you need help in. You might bring in a Business Coach for a specific project you are thinking about, or for general help. You might employ a Business Coach to coach you in areas where you don't have enough knowledge. Here are some examples:
- Running a Small Business
- Starting a Business
- Franchising
- Internet Business
- Sales and Marketing
- Accounting and Cash Management
- Logistics and Operations
- Distance Selling
- Manufacturing and Production
- Business Expansion
- Exporting
- Sourcing Products and Services
- IT Systems
- Recruitment and Training
- Buying or Selling a Business
The list is extensive in business, and many organisations, government and private, are there to support businesses.
Career Coaching - specific about helping you to achieve your personal and financial objectives in your career. Sometimes people want to find out why they are not progressing as fast as they expected, a non-judgemental relationship with a coach who gives meaningful feedback can help. Career Coaching is often used alongside Outplacement Services and can help people re-evaluate their career goals and prepare for change.
Executive Coaching. Very popular at the moment and recognised to provide significant value to both companies and individuals, Executive Coaching concentrates on improving the workplace performance of Executives and Managers, mostly in medium and large organisations. Executive Coaching can sometimes take in the specific dimensions of life at the top of the organisation that are pertinent only to people in very senior corporate life.
Executive Coaching is well served by a large community of coaches and professional organisations.
Leadership Coaching. Similar to and with a lot of cross-over with Executive Coaching, leadership coaching has it's main focus on the attitudes, skills and capabilities of successful leaders in business and public life.
Spiritual Coaching. Some Life Coaches approach coaching from a specific spiritual viewpoint or belief system. (Like Christianity, or Shamanism, or 'Law of Attraction'). These coaches use their spiritual beliefs and the practices of their spirituality to inform and construct the coaching process. This can suit you as a coach and you wish to do this, or if you want to be coached on the basis of your own beliefs.
Online Life Coaching. The development of the internet has seen the emergence of the Online Life Coach, sometimes known a the 'Virtual Life Coach'. Online Life Coaching can be delivered like a distance learning course, or in the form of 'phone calls' using technology like SKYPE. Real-time messaging tools like MSN, AIM or Apple's iChat can be used, or sometimes email. The style and form of delivery of online life coaching varies, but in essence the coaching relationship is carried out through the medium and of the internet and using the tools available online such as:
Coaching Tools in the form of PDF's that can be downloaded, printed and worked on.
Online Interactive - online forms and questionnaire's are used, especially for psychometrics such as the MBTI (the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator - a psychometric tool often used in coaching).
MP3's are used and downloaded giving step-by-step guidance through coaching processes. This can be an extremely effective way for the person to work through a technique or method used in life coaching, for example:
⁃ Goal Setting
⁃ Overcoming Phobias or specific fears
⁃ Determining Values
⁃ Working with Limiting Beliefs
Video's for viewing either online or by downloading. Again video's are especially useful for explaining techniques and processes - 'pieces of work' that form part of the coaching process. It's also quite nice to see what your coach looks like!
Whilst I would recommend face to face coaching in most cases as being the most effective form of coaching, online life coaching can also be extremely useful.
Sports Coaching - is where coaching as we now know it, started. It is generally accepted that to get to achieve peak performance in sports a coach's support is virtually indispensable. Sports coaching now extends beyond pure physical performance to psychology, dealing with the 'inner game' and overcoming beliefs and mental attitudes that prevent sports people from achieving their very best.
