Picture the scene.. One million years ago.
Two hairy cavemen dressed in animal skins. Hair all over them. Clubs and stone axes at their feet.
Both are staring at a round hunk of rock about 3 feet in diameter.
" What is it ?" one of them (call him Ken) grunts in cave man lingo...
" The first wheel.." says the other (call him Brian)..
"I've never seen one of those before..." says Ken. "Neither have I" said Brian looking bemused.." but I think it'll be big in the future..."
"Naaah...It'll never work....people love doing things the hard way too much Kev.."
With that, they turn and walk away. Back into their cold, dark cave...
Luckily Brian and Kev were not the leaders of the day.
But many others in more recent times have not seen the possibilities in marvellous new ideas either.
SOME BIG PREDICTIONS FOR MANKIND....
Just have a laugh at some of these great predictions... The only thing is, people at the time took them very seriously ..
"Who wants to hear actors talk ?" Hollywood film mogul Harry Warner in 1921.
"That car is not worth a damn" Ernest Breech, Vice President of Ford Motors on being offered the opportunity of manufacturing the VW Beetle after World War II.
“Everything that can be invented has been invented." Report to U.S President William McKinley from the American Patent Office, 1899.
At the time of making these statements I'm sure each of these eminent citizens would have argued till they were blue in the face how right they were in their views. After all, they were experts in their field....
LOCKED INTO ONE WAY OF THINKING So often in business and personal life we have a mindset which says "things can't change...and I've got plenty of evidence to support it...."
"This is as good as its ever going to get..."
"That idea just won't work.. We tried it10 years ago.."
"I would if I could, but I can't, so I won't.."
When the Swiss invented the LCD Watch they said, "No, it will never take off..."
They were the world leaders in watchmaking, they should know. They didn't even bother to patent the idea it was so stupid. When the Americans and Japanese saw it, they had a different response. The rest is history. (Bon voyage Swiss watchmakers)
When Columbus wanted to sail around the world. When Colonel Sanders wanted to sell 11 different herbs and spices.
When Ray Kroc wanted to sell pre prepared hamburgers and fries.
When Bill Gates started talking about a PC on everyone’s desk there were always people there to tell each and every one of these people that it wouldn’t work.
The innovator has to push beyond this. The innovator surrounds themselves with people mad enough to show how it will work.
Exercise one: THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX In the new millennium and beyond, if Australia is to thrive, if Australia and Australian business is to blossom into a leader, not a follower.... we will need to let go of much of our past thinking.
We will all have to break free from the shackles of our own limitations in thinking.
Firstly we will need to stand fairly in front of the mirror and face the truth. Look our limitations squarely in the eye and say "It's time to kiss you goodbye .... I've carried you around long enough..Now it's time for business."
For its only when we face the truth about ourselves can we make corrections. And sometimes, the truth hurts..but only for a short time.
Because once we have faced the truth, we can make corrections. And within a short time, we start to realise the benefits of our new approach to the world..
Exercise Two: THE MIRROR TEST TO FREEDOM..
Try it.
Take a look in the mirror tomorrow morning and ask yourself these questions:
"Am I limiting my field of vision? Can I think bigger?"
" How much bigger can I think?"
" To truly optimise my potential, what do I need to do?"
" For my business to truly optimise its potential, what do we need to do as a team?"
" For my family to truly optimise its potential, what do we need to do as a team?"
" What's stopping me ?"
" What do I need to do to break the shackles of my own limitations..?"
Exercise Three: START WITH THE END IN MIND Imagine Australia by the end of the decade. Imagine Ten Years from now.
Imagine having the highest standard of living in the world.
Imagine a positive balance of trade - owing no-one anything. Overseas countries owing us.
Imagine overseas countries sitting back agast at how quickly we have turned our economy and our quality of life around to become the best in the world in 7 short years.
Imagine a positive, dynamic business and education system - working together to a plan for long term optimum quality of life for all Australians.
Isn't it a fantastic dream ?
This is all possible if we choose to break free of our present limitations - if you and I dare to expand our field of vision.
Exercise Four: Put the Dreams down on Paper If you and I dare to take time to think about and write down an expanded field of vision. To dare to commit our dreams to paper...
" My vision for our future is................
This will involve me being .........................
This will involve my business being ......................
This will involve my family being ............................."
Share this new vision with your workmates, your friends, your family....Live your expanded vision. Eat, breathe and sleep it..make it part of your very being...
At this point in time, we in Australia need as many people as possible daring to break free of their old limitations to expand the limits of their vision. Be bold, dare to expand...
As Walt Disney once said, "If you can dream it, you can do it.."
Please my friend, join the dreamers of the day....your future needs you....
