The Five Why’s
So, did you hit all of your goals in 2008?
If not you likely encountered some obstacles, either mental or
environmental that stopped you. In order to overcome those obstacles it
helps to understand where they come from.
Asking yourself the question, “Why is that so?” can be really
helpful in getting to the root cause of your challenges and help you
find solutions to them.
Here is an interesting little example of how asking the question
“Why is that so” five times in a row can be a powerful problem-solving
tool.
Problem: A few years ago the Washington Monument was crumbling.
Why was that so?
Because the building was being cleaned using harsh chemicals.
Why was that so?
Because the building was covered in bird poop.
Why was that so?
Because the birds flocked to the building to eat the spiders.
Why was that so?
Because there were tons of spiders to eat the gnats.
Why was that so?
Because the gnats love the lights that shine on the monument
Solution: Turn the lights on later in the evening.
What obstacles or challenges are you facing right now? Ask yourself
the 5 Why’s and see if you can’t come up with the root cause of your
problem. Only when you know that can you really tackle and overcome it.
Happy New Year everyone. May 2009 be your very best year ever!
