1. Stay open. Make sure that you do not create physical barriers between you and your prospects. You will usually get tables with your booth rental; do not set a table between you and the traffic aisle. You want people to enter your space and feel comfortable. Do not block them out with your table to display placement. At a trade show, you’ll often see tables set parallel with the traffic aisle with the exhibitors sitting behind their table. This is no way to make a good first impression. Instead, position the display table in the back of the booth space or perpendicular to the traffic aisle and discard the chairs altogether. By welcoming attendees into your space, you create an inviting environment.
2. Come prepared. Create a checklist and use it before you pack up for the trade show. By developing a list of things to remember, you won’t get caught scrambling at the last minute. Your checklist should include things like your display, promotional materials, business cards, drapes, fish bowl, give-aways, costumes, props, sign-up sheets, pens, carpet, electricity hook-up, extension cords, tape, scissors, stapler, trash bags, booth assignments, raffle/drawing cards, door prize, signage, and money (for lunch, parking, change for product sales, etc.).
3. Have fun. Nothing is worse than feeling like you’re stuck at a trade show when you want to be somewhere else. Yet, so many people working booths look bored to tears. Your attitude is like a billboard to attendees, and you don’t want to be sending the wrong message. Trade shows are not for the faint of heart or spirit. Exhibiting at a show is an opportunity for you to put yourself out there and really engage others. You don’t have to be over-the-top, but having fun and being fun will make the time fly by while drawing others to you. Create a “fun strategy” and use it to connect with others at the show.
