Three Ways to Reduce Workplace Stress

Do you feel as though the stress levels in your workplace seem to have escalated over the last ten years or so? I don't think it's your imagination. Requests for my company's teambuilding and workplace development programs have tripled in the last three years. Last year alone, over a million people "Googled" workplace stress related search terms such as difficult situations, difficult people, bad bosses, mean coworkers, nasty customers, etc. Nope, if you're feeling stress, you're not alone. More and more research is pointing to stress as a growing factor for in all of our lives. One study released last year, Voices of Canadians: Seeking Work-Life Balance (Duxbury, Higgins & Coghill) confirmed that stress at work is is negatively impacting us both at work and at home. Similar studies in the US, Australia and other countries show that the escalation of stress is a worldwide phenomenon.

What can we do about this workplace stress? Here are three recommendations that came from the Duxbury, Higgins & Coghill study:

1. Put things into perspective

Learn to recognize what (if anything) is truly worth losing sleep over. In the overall scheme of things, is this a life-changing event, or just an annoyance? Learn to ignore the annoyances.

2. Focus on what is going well - not what is stressful

At any given moment, something in your life is going right (honest - it is!). Concentrate on the wins in life, not the losses.

3. Find a job you enjoy

When you enjoy what you do, it makes it easier to deal with heavy workloads and stressful situations.

Good Luck!

Re: Infographic: The 4 Main Stress Factors Re: Infographic: The 4 Main Stress Factors - I'd like to reference that article in my next blog post as well.. I worked in sales for years and found that days when I was positive, relaxed where days that it was easy to sell. On days that I was stressed I found I would not reach target. Stress is good at times, but it very easily becomes problematic. I do a lot of very physical exercise and work now, to manage it.

Where to print a book Where to print a book - [quote:39vg8s93]So, writing a chapter a day, I finished in a month, and Kidpreneur: Genius Ways for Kids to Pay For College was born. Currently my book is self published -- I just printed up 100 copies to give to all the people featured in the book, teachers, and some more to sell at $20.00 a piece (it costs $10.00 a copy at Kinko's, so it's not really an outrageous price). [/quote:39vg8s93] If at all possible, you need to stop using Kinko's now and go price some real printers. It should cost only a couple of dollars a piece, if that, to print your book. Admittedly you'll have to buy in bulk, but the overall savings - selling a $2 book for $20 so that you make an $18 profit instead of a measley $10.... is something every kidpreneur should think about!

But few are willing to expose the failures and setbacks that have lined their paths through the battle zones of business. Kay Hammer is that rare breed. With startling candor and penetrating intelligence, this "very modern, very American heroine (Forbes) gives a frank and full recounting of her mid-career reinvention, from a linguistics professor alone to the President, CEO, and co-founder of Evolutionary Technologies International... Hammer's new life began with an epiphany - that nothing substantive in her life would change unless she made it happen. There would be no Prince Charming. From that moment on, she began a long, ardous journey to carve for herself in the youthful, male-dominated software industry-a journey which she likens to serving the apprenticeship of a medieval warrior... Her strategies are geared for battles on all fronts: not only for disarming foes, gaining allies, and winning battles in the boardroom, but also for confronting the internal enemies of self-doubt, fear of failure, and unresolved anger.
