Boomers Are Booming

A lot of baby boomers are asking the question, why retire? Michael Milken has an enlightening article on the Opinion page of the Wall Street Journal. The title is simply, "Seventh Decade."

You needn't be a baby boomer to find this article instructive.

According to the article people are adding years to their lives. And the good news is, they are adding healthy years.

Quoting from the article, "When people are vibrant into their 80s and 90s, 65 will evolve from the traditional retirement age to a mid-career milestone for those who choose to keep working."

Milken also says, "Who wants to retire when you have fulfilling work, when you earn a good income, and when you feel great?"

He also cites a Yahoo poll, "70% of the people over 55 say it's never too late to start a new business." Of course, less than 10% will actually do it and that's a pity.

One of the keys for me in this article is, "When you have fulfilling work." In my travels around North America I don't observe very many happy campers. I'm sorry, I just don't get the impression that most people see their work as fulfilling.

Maybe your twentysomething. Maybe you're a thirtysomething. Maybe you're a 40 something. At what point in your life do you finally decide to find work you enjoy and find fulfilling?

Many years ago I heard the following: some people die at 40 and get buried at 76. Life is far too short to be spending it working a job you don't particularly care for. You are truly the captain of your own ship. You are the architect for your life. The way you live your life will be summed up and added to your epitaph.

Is your life the way you want it to be? If not, why not? You are the way you are because of the choices you've made. I'm in the very same situation. As I get older I keep removing words from my dictionary. Gone from Webster's finest is "Can't" and "Impossible" and "Hope" and "Commodity" and of course one of my least favorite words, "Discount."

I've recently deleted these words: "Stagnation" and "Status quo."

You needn't labor and suffer through life and you won't if you're constantly stirring the pot. Asking questions beginning with "What if" and "How can I" can literally change your life. At the very least, it will change how you think about things.

Boomers are booming!

If you're a twentysomething, is your business booming?

If you're a thirtysomething, is your business booming?

If you're a fortysomething, is your business booming?

If your business isn't booming it could be bombing. If your businesses is neither booming nor bombing, and is someplace in between, the choices you make today will influence whether your business is booming or bombing tomorrow.

If you dread Monday mornings it probably has less to do with the day "Monday" than it does how you feel about your work.

You live in the greatest country on the planet.

You have unlimited options.

You have unlimited potential.

If you don't reach your potential while you're living, you run the risk of having someone prepare this as your epitaph. "Here rests a person with permanent potential!"

It is very interesting to see that 93% are likely to pass on product info and that 80% use broadband... How could you use that information to market specifically to this market segment?

Do Boomers Make Better Entrepreneurs? Do Boomers Make Better Entrepreneurs? - I was in a discussion yesterday with a friend who was adamant that Boomers make better entrepreneurs because they: - Have more life experience - Have more money - Have more connections What do you think? Do boomers make better entrepreneurs?
Re: 10 ideas to make you money in 2010 Re: 10 ideas to make you money in 2010 - I think Education would be hard to break into. Baby Boomers, Life Support and Trading Down, however, seem like good markets. As for Green technology goes, I don't think the business has to be entirely based on Green ideologies, but rather a business that embrace Green philosophies and use that as a marketing tool.

Most of the people I play tennis with are over the age of 30 and the vast majority of them do not use Facebook, so I can't even organize a "tennis group" or share my US Open pictures with them. In fact, I typically have to call each "boomer" via cell phone just to plan a tennis match because they're too busy to even reply to their emails.
