Written by: Mary BrandArticle Overview: With new laws requiring medical records to all be electronic soon, many doctors are scrambling to get through the many choices that are out there so they can see which of the many software available, would best fit into their practice without a large disruption in the flow of their office and without breaking their budgets at a time when we're all tightening our belts. Doing that isn't always easy, so I'm offering some insights that may help during this process.

Choosing the Best Chiropractic Software for your Practice Style
With insurance requiring more paper work than ever, it might be time for you to consider going electronic on your soap notes. The term electronic makes it almost sound cryptic and unfriendly, when in reality many systems are very friendly and pleasing to view. Remember the old DOS billing systems? They were not very pretty, but a requirement for running a practice.
It has become the same for electronic notes. Finding the right system can save you tons of time, give you great quality notes and save staff time pulling charts. These are just a few of what they can do for you. Many will even connect to your existing billing software to help with the flow of CPT codes! Now that is pretty cool considering that the average physician under-codes approximately $20K per year.
Systems range from $500 and can go all the way over $20,000. Most will run on any hardware (meaning tablets, laptops or PCs) and very few will run on smaller PDAs (palm pilots). Soap Notes systems typically have an ongoing cost which starts around $300 per year and some are as much as $700 per month. These ongoing costs generally include technical support and upgrades to the software.
With that said, your investment really depends on what you need to effectively control your patient charts.
So how do I find a system? I have no time, don’t want to spend the money and notes are not a fun part of my job….
There is no way around it. You have to do your homework. All the software companies are online now, so this can sometimes be done after-hours or on days off. To begin with you should make a list of what is more important to you and what you are most concerned about finding in a system. Then narrow the field based on which system meets your needs and consider which companies are the easiest to work with. Once you have them narrowed down to a few, ask for references, take the time to call and follow-up on references and ask them how they are using the system and what they like (also what they don’t like). Most are honest and you will get the truth from real customers.
Many doctors spend a ton of time price shopping and that is not always the best approach. Do you really want the cheapest possible solution, or do you want the best solution for you? Quite possibly, money spent now on a quality system, will be money saved in the long run.

As with any job, you are constantly selling yourself in order to get the best results from your efforts. It is that realization that inspired me to go directly into the field of sales to see if I was correct that my previous experiences would facilitate sales success. Since moving into the field over 6 years ago, I feel that I have indeed used many of my teaching/er experiences to close sales and have also honed many new skills so that I am not only an asset to our company, but an integral link in the chain that holds our business together. I feel fortunate to be able to share some of my expertise with our forum and hope to get to know our members better through the process.
