Make 2009 Your Best Year Ever Part II

Be cautious about excessive fixation on market share. Some nameplate market share leaders are undergoing massive restructuring or facing bankruptcy. Stay close to your customers and listen at the deepest possible level.

Collaborate with customers to anticipate and create with them genuine current and future value. Like an expert pool player, help them set up the cue-ball for their next shot. This customer-focused approach requires making tough choices based on a sharper focus on where profits will be created in the future. Follow the money.

Key Questions:

"What do our customers truly value?"
(Clue: It's not always the lowest price, but price is a strong consideration as organizations lose customers and margins. Like it or not, if you don't have a strong differentiating factor, you're a
commodity and customers will shop prices. Incidentally, relationships are nice, but are only differentiators when all offerings are the same.)

"What will customers value enough to allow us to make a profit providing it?"
(Clue: There is value in customer knowledge and being a trusted advisor. People will pay a bit more for this, but not much more.)

"What can I create that inoculates customers against the competition?"
(Clue: It's usually more than "quality', 'innovative' products, or 'value-added' services.)

"How do I move towards providing future customers with what they want and need without adding additional costs to my product, delivery, or service?"

Of course we are only scratching the surface here. We invite you along this customer-focused road less traveled. Let's leave behind those whining about the economy or tinkering with their costs, products, and services as we move into future profit zones.

We still hear far too much whining and complaining about the economy. Our commitment for 2009 is to work with our clients to stimulate our collective economies.
