Management Mistake #2: Creating conceptual and fuzzy strategic plans
Leadership styles are as diverse as our culture. Some are loud; others speak softly and appear
genuinely shy. Some deal in concrete numbers; others focus on people. Many use charts and
graphs; others rely on inspiration and personal contact. It seems there is no standard leadership style. However, great leaders find ways to communicate in concrete terms. They have in
their head a picture of the organization they are building [Vision]. They learn ways to enlist the willing cooperation of others in building their dream.
For example, Microsoft has a clear purpose, "To help people and businesses around the world
realize their full potential." Do you remember 1975 when Bill Gates declared a vision of "a
computer on every desk and in every home?" Did you buy their stock in the 70's? Consider the
power and simplicity of his bold declaration. Gates was equally clear when he says, "Think it, and
build it, bit by bit. Great ideas alone don't guarantee success--you have to create an environment
where those ideas can be transformed into products and services that are easy to use, a great
value, and widely available." In 2009, watch as Microsoft integrates Dale Carnegie principles into
customer relationship management and sales software. Scrutinize your organization's purpose, vision, strategies, and tactics. Typically, an organization's purpose is broad and deep, but it is critical that your vision is crystal clear.
How effective are you at repeatedly articulating a picture of the business you are creating? When
I worked as a morning show host over 35 years ago, my Program Director told me, "Dave, when
you're getting tired of your material, listeners are just beginning to notice it." Communicate,
communicate, communicate! Keep the picture of your desired future in front of people. Ensure
that others consistently hear the vision from your lips and the lips of key players. If others cannot picture your desired end result, it will be challenging for them to stay focused on what is
required.
