The mistakes we make are not as important as the lessons we learn from them

Recently I re read one of my favourite little books in my library. "If life is a game, these are the rules" by Cherie Carter Scott.

Her ten rules for playing the game of life are as follows;

1. You will receive a body
2. You will be presented with lessons
3. There are no mistakes, only lessons
4. A lesson is repeated until learned
5. Learning does not end
6. There is no better than here
7. Others are only mirrors of you
8. What you make of life is up to you
9. All answers lie inside of you
10. You will forget all of this at birth

During one of my presentations recently, a young business man asked me how he could reach his goals more quickly. I suggested he double his failure rate i.e. make more mistakes. We are all going to make many mistakes. That's just an unavoidable fact of playing this game we call life. Therefore we might as well make them quicker, learn from each one and improve sooner. Get in the game!

Lesson # 9 in Cherie Carter Scott's list is where I believe success is really to be found. We spend our time attending training programmes and conferences which are designed to teach us technical skills in our particular field of expertise. We go looking for the answers to our concerns and challenges outside ourselves. We're looking in the wrong place! All the technical skills training in the world will have little affect on a person with low self esteem/ self belief. All your answers lie inside of you.

PLAYER OR SPECTATOR?
Are you a player or a spectator in life? They say there are three types of people in the world. Those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who say "What just happened?"

THE RUSSIAN SUCCESS FORMULA
I would like to share with you a formula for success in all areas of life.
Many years ago the letters CCCP were a symbol for Russia. To be precise, USSR i.e. United Soviet Socialist Republic. It disbanded some time ago now so I have taken the liberty of borrowing it as my own symbol for my success formula. The "P" is the foundation, so it needs to be read and understood from the bottom up.

P = Practice C = Competence C = Confidence C = Courage/ Commitment

PRACTICE
What is the one and only way to get good at absolutely anything? The answer is to practice. It fascinates me that so fe people are prepared to spend time practicing. The All Blacks rugby team spend 92% of their time on the practice ground as oppose to 8% playing time. We can do this with our self belief too!

COMPETENCE
If you practice anything for long enough and in the correct way, what happens? You get good at it! Hardly rocket science is it?

CONFIDENCE
If you are good at something, how is that going to make you feel? And yet confidence is the thing that so many people lack in life.

COURAGE/ COMMITMENT
If you're good and you know it, and if that competence gives you confidence, it will then also give you the courage and commitment to do what ever it takes to get where you want to go in life, safe in the knowledge that you have the ability to achieve success.

So where does it all go wrong for so many people? My Russian Success Formula sounds fantastic doesn't it? But what I found when I enthusiastically started to teach it, was that...........
IT DIDN'T WORK!

People nodded and agreed it made sense but when I returned to work with those same people again, nothing had changed. Back to the drawing board I went, looking for the missing piece on the formula. What I found was lacking was GOALS. Practice is too much like hard work, and human's are not normally in to hard work. The truth is that they would rather go to the pub or watch TV. The only thing that will motivate us to do what we know we need to do in order to get where we want to go are dreams, goals, aspirations and passion. Then and only then will we be prepared to spend time practicing and working towards those dreams. For more on goal setting and achievement, see my articel "The dynamite ten step goal achievement plan".

Re: what causes franchises to fail? Re: what causes franchises to fail? - Though it's true a large portion of new businesses lose money the first year, most go on to break even the first year or even are profitable. If you have a good franchise on your hands and manage the business wisely as well as utilize all that the franchise system has to offer (such as on-going training and support), It would not take 5 years to become profitable. I work with franchisees on a daily basis in getting them funded. We have a lot of repeat business and receive multiple loan requests for 2nd and 3rd locations, typically within 1 - 2 years of when they began their first unit. I review their current business financials and rarely have seen their first unit losing money after the first year. Generally they break even the first year and become profitable after that. I've even seen great success straight away and have seen franchisees open a 2nd unit within 6 months of the first, because they were already profitable by then! I think it mainly boils down to how you manage and making sure you have enough money to cover yourself the first year so you don't go under. There are loan statistics, and I have statistics on over 320 franchises (loan failure rate) and 298 of them have only 8% or less failure rate...so, for the most part, they are decent statistics. Worst on the list with over half their loans defaulting (55.26%) was a soup & sub shop type franchise and a bed & breakfast type franchise with nearly half (44.44%)! I cannot name the franchises exactly, so please do not request it. FYI- Lenders prefer to approve loans for franchises that have under 8% failure.

Private Venture Capital Consortiums and Funding Syndicates Private Venture Capital Consortiums and Funding Syndicates - From the posts in this forum (all threads) it is very clear that funding is in high demand and many entrepreneurs are unsuccessful in sourcing, not to mention secure, private international venture capital. There are about 6000 international associations linked to venture capital around the globe and they all make their presence noticed on the internet. For most entrepreneurs this will sound very attractive, and it should be, but many unfortunately will stare disappointment in the face at the start of their endevours. The international success rate for venture capital finance / funding in start up projects is an unbelieveable low 2% - 5% maximum. Most venture capitalist linked with associations will require some sort of surity or guarantee of up to 50% of the investment. The entrepreneur will then have to pay fees up front before a cent has been invested, not to mention broker / consultant commissions of up to 12% of the total value of the project. Why is the success rate so low (2% - 5%)? - 1. Business Plan - poor preparation and insufficient information. Every entrepreneur will explain how big a specific market is in potential profits but they all lack the basic important factor every investor wants to see and that is How and What are you going to do to capture 10% of that market sector. Stop telling every investor that you "want" to capture 10%, tell them how you will go about doing so. 2. Management Team - How can anyone expect from an investor to invest in a company with poor management. How about investing $5 million in a one man operation - where is the security for the venture capitalist. Be realistic, put yourself in the position of the investor, argue the facts and then approach an investor if you are able to convince them of your project or business. 3. Project - If your project or business (products or service) is not unique or cheaper venture capitalists will not invest - final. If it is existing technologies, products or services improve them or make them cheaper. Entrepreneurs should always research venture capitalist befire approaching them - it is the difference between success anf failure Always Remember - Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan. ----------------
Who's best for first time commercial loan? Who's best for first time commercial loan? - I truly hope you can prove me wrong on this. If you do, please post your experience for others to benefit from. I think you will be VERY disappointed in the types of financing available to small businesspeople. The SBA is one way to go, but it requires that you put money down and allow them to put leins on everything you own, from your home to your underwear. As for true "commercial" loans, the banks I've spoken to won't even consider it if you've been in business less than 2 years. Even then, they try hard to channel it into an SBA program if they can (because of the partial loan guarantee.) So, basically, the answer near as I can figure is that nearly nobody provides true commercial lending to new endeavors. If you really want a shock, you should see the interest rates that small businesses pay on unsecured small-business loans once they do qualify. Double digit interest rates are more the rule than the exception. You'd be better off taking cash advances at intro rates on your credit card. You might seek sources of venture capital. Allow yourself a repayment provision whereby you buy out initial investors at their initial investment plus a reasonable rate of return.
