Written by: Jenny Cartwright

How to Get Prospects To Use You Instead of Their Existing Supplier

How often does this happen? You make a call to a new prospect to introduce them to the idea of using your products and services and they tell you that they already have a supplier with whom they are happy, thank you. Not you, I am sure, but poor salespeople would say, "Oh, that's okay good-bye." They would lose the opportunity of ever doing business with this person simply because they had never worked out what to say, when this objection comes up.
The objection probably comes up frequently too. What if you had the perfect answer to this objection? Then every time it came up, you would have an answer to keep the prospect interested?
I suggest you don't immediately start data dumping all over the customer about how much better your product or service . The best tactic is to show understanding and get the customer talking by asking questions.
Let's explore some different ways of dealing with this:-
Start every answer to an objection with empathy to build rapport.
"That's fine Mr/Mrs ______ I understand that you would most likely have a supplier already." (note you use empathy to build rapport.)
Then continue with the option of your choice below:-
Option 1.
"May I ask who you are using?"
"What is it you particularly like about your existing supplier? (wait for answer)
What else would you like them to do for you to make them absolutely perfect? (wait for answer)
So, if we could do or give you (what they like about their current supplier) and (the thing that would make them perfect), you might want to talk to us further do you think? What time would suit you to get together next week, Monday or Tuesday?"
Option 2.
"What would happen if your current supplier, all of a sudden, could not fulfill your requirements? (or ran out of stock?)" (Depending on their answer, you would continue with:-)
"Howabout we send you our contact details and information about our services so we can be your standby if such a scenario occurs?
Option 3.
"How long have you been using your existing supplier?" (wait for answer and repeat what they say)
"Sometimes it is good to check whether you are paying the right price for services when you have been using the same supplier for a while. Howabout I give you a quote for using our services so you can make sure you are getting the most value for your money? Please note when comparing prices that our products/services also include ........." (add your value here - it may put doubt in their mind.)
Option 4.
"What would have to happen for you to consider changing your supplier?"
Option 5.
"That's great that you are happy with your supplier. When you changed to your current supplier, you must have changed for a specific reason. Do you remember what that was? When you next get around to contemplating a change, what would you want your next supplier to do?" (It may give you a chance to offer what they want.)
Option 6.
"I realise you may not be interested in our services right now but I would love to send you some information about our products/services so you will be well informed for the future."
Option 7.
"I realise you are happy with your existing supplier, so I am not asking you to give us all of your business. I would like you to consider giving us 1% of your business initially, so you have the opportunity to compare our services with theirs and see the difference. How does that sound?
Option 8.
If none of these work for you try this:
"So what do I/we have to do to be able to do business with you?"
It is recommended you put your favourite option on a wall in front of your phone so you will never choke on this objection again!

I was mainly referring to Auto Responder emails. To end a normal email, I attach signatures. Takuya
Simple way to avoid Cold Calling Simple way to avoid Cold Calling - Gary, A chiropractor I work with hates cold calling (me too!) and he uses a technique to warm people up to using his services - it's so simple! In Sales your dealing with 3 pools of people: 1. Strangers 2. Prospects 3. Returning Customers You need to move people from one pool to the next. We'll concentrate on #1 and #2 as it's most relevant to your question. My Clients does the following (you just have to tailor it to your situation - be creative). My Client (we'll call him Bob) Bob leverages his time and resources to only get people that need his offer (pain relief) to put their hand up. Dealing with Strangers can get expensive and they don't like to be told what to do as they have no trust or relationship built with him. So to get Strangers to put their hands up he writes up an offer with a free report on a particular pain relief - let's say lower back pain (note: he can simply just change lower back pain to neck pain and have a new report). and uses multiple marketing vehicles to promote the Free report - magazines, newspaper, forums, postcards, private clinics etc. The only people picking up this information are the very people Bob would like as customers as they have Lower back pain. Bob's Free report ends with him stating his services and includes a Free in-house Consultation with no obligation. You'd be surprised at how easily Bob converts Strangers into Prospects. Note: They become prospects when they ask for the Free Guide and in exchange provide their contact details. This gives Bob unlimited opportunity to contact them for the Free in-house consultation with no obligation to continue using him. At this stage Bob's ability to close the sale lies in his office providing good customer service, Bob's ability to help the prospect and provide value at the free in-house consultation. Notice, he hasn't had to pick up the phone to COLD-CALL his Stranger pool or his Prospect pool. Hope that example helps to increase your prospecting!
Pitch Like A Girl: How a Woman Can Be Herself and Still Succ Pitch Like A Girl: How a Woman Can Be Herself and Still Succ - Pitch Like A Girl: How a Woman Can Be Herself and Still Succeed Ronna Lichtenberg 2005 From the inside cover: "As a woman, you probably feel uncomfortable when it comes to promoting yourself and asking for what you want." WHAT IN THE HECK IS THIS, I asked myself when I read that. Women are the fastest growing business owners in the US and Canada, there are t housands of women executives and CEOs - though not as many as might be expected, admittedly, yet the book opens with this surely out of date stereotype. However, as she continued to give examples of women who had high paying jobs but were routinely not paid as much as men because it hadn't occurred to them to ask for raises, etc., I decided it was probably true for a majority of businesswomen... Anyway, more of the info from the jacket: "Other books have told you how to get what you want by being more like a guy. Pitch Like A Girl tells you why its an advantage to be who you are and how to do better by bringing more of yourself to work." The TOC: 1. Pink and Blue 2. The Quck-dry Chapter 3. Re: 40 cents per dollar is spent in a franchised business Re: 40 cents per dollar is spent in a franchised business - Hey Ringo, In general terms the location itself isn't even looked at until the franchise agreement is signed and the fees are paid to the franchisor. Then and only then do they start looking for a location. This is common practice and with the plethora of commercial locations that are available right now we are seeing landlords bend over backwards on negotiations to get a good tenant. That being said, the area is what the franchisor will look at on the demographics, they won't generally put a franchise in an area just because a buyer wants it there, most times the buyers have a preconceived notion of what they consider "the right spot". The franchisor has the data to support specific demographics, so that is where the help comes into play. The due diligence items I recommend looking into prior to buying are: 1. Average Expenses. 2. Average Revenues. 3. Litigation. 4. Business model. 5. Training. 6. Existing franchisees. Most of the time once you get through those things the rest is easy to get through. You need to know how much it cost, how much you can make, what is your exposure legally, is the model right, who/how are you trained and talk to as many existing franchisees as you can. You are looking for consistency. There is absolutely no way that every single franchise owner is happy with the home office, it is just impossible. You are looking for consistency, hearing the same things in general. Numbers, support, training, advertising, marketing, ongoing training, growth, industry etc... If you don't hear consistent things, most likely the model isn't working in all markets or there is something else affecting it like industry or distribution or training.
