The Key to You Team's Success is Communication!
In life there are skills that would be advantageous to have, skills that you should have and skills that you will never achieve greatness without. The ability to communicate effectively isn't something you can rely on others to do for you in a leadership role. It isn't a task that you can delegate. In times of war, one of the key targets that the military sets its sights on is the communication tools and methods of the enemy. Communication is the heart of a military operation. It is the command centre where all actions are set into motion. Take out their communication and you have removed the brain, the opponent becomes dazed and paralyzed. Their ability to plan and take effective action is disarmed. An army without communication wanders aimlessly and hopelessly while the enemy surrounds and crushes them.
Often when organizations experience troubling times one of the root causes is poor or non-existent communication. The "so-called" leader at the helm doesn't set the example for proper dialogue and direction. When people feel they are being left in the dark about important matters it creates uneasiness and dissention. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. At all times, but especially during dark and difficult periods the need for communication is critical. Keeping people "in the loop" even if the news isn't positive will make them feel less uncertain and more in control to make a difference in turning things around. People will come together and fight as a unit for the cause when communication levels are maintained. They will bail out and the charge will be, "Every man for himself!" when there is a breakdown in communication.
People can't help you unless you communicate your wants, needs and desires with them. Say something! Get comfortable relaying the thoughts and ideas in your head to those who you count on. In the same regard, get people comfortable speaking with you. You hear parents say all the time that they can't relate with their kids. Usually they are talking about their teenagers and they act as if the problem began yesterday but the truth is the problem started many years ago. If they had gotten comfortable speaking with their kids when they were very young and maintained the line of communication then both sides would be more comfortable speaking with each other which is essential when the child is faced with troubling choices.
Email and text messages are excellent but they have limitations. Too often today these forms of communication are used to excess. Many inner office problems arise from this form of communication. Always use caution because once you hit send, you can't take it back. All too often messages in print are misinterpreted and can cause irreparable harm. Face to face communication cannot be replaced.
Encourage communication, breakdown barriers, walls and fences between staff and departments. Employ proper communication and questioning techniques with your staff. Think about what you are going to say before you say it. Know how you plan to say it and express yourself. Articulate your message so that is clear and easily understood. Practice before delivering important or difficult thoughts, ideas or somber news. Paraphrase, confirm, clarify and ask for more information when necessary. Idiot proof your instructions and when in doubt ask people to explain what they've understood you to have asked of them. Praise your people in public so that they receive the recognition they deserve amongst their peers. Reprimand behind closed doors in private so that you don't humiliate and demoralize people for having made mistakes or poor decisions.
The question is, are you the kind of communicator that you need to be in order to lead the way you know that you should? If you really want to know the truth, ask those who you can depend on to provide you with an honest answer. Ask them how they feel about your communication methods, techniques, manners and messages. Give them the liberty to be honest and forthright. Ask them what you could do to improve upon your communication in order to be a better leader, manager or employer.
"Leadership is communicating to people so clearly their worth and potential that they come to see it in themselves."

Business Coaching Internship Review
- I joined in during the first phase of the internship and at this point we are committed to doing research and development of RSC Business Group operating in Toronto.
RSC Business Group already has products and services in Coaching Small businesses in Los Angeles but we didn't want to assume that the same products were wanted and needed in the Toronto market. Our goal at this point is to commit to interviewing 1000 business owners to capture this data.
Through the teleconference internship I've been involved in we've been focusing on Communication Skills and on active listening which are practiced when we conduct our interviews and Coach our clients when they come on board. This is a lot harder than it sounds!
Part of the internship is also creating the Toronto RSC Business Group's departments, job descriptions, Marketing and Communication plans etc that a business owner would create for their own company. This trains us in the way we would coach a company as well.
The internship is phased in two parts and there is compensation plan involved as well for the clients you personally bring in. These clients are coached directly by Robert Chun as you begin but you are given a chance to learn his techniques. I haven't gone through this experience yet though.
It's hard to explain Robert Chun's method of Coaching as it happens at a psychological level in his ability to listen and question the person being coached into the next steps they need to take.
The Teleconferences are 2 hours long but it's very interactive. If you have a desire to explore this area of Business I'd recommend contacting Vwodek listed above and get invited to a Coaching Conference call. You can decided then if it's for you.
Note: it is a commitment but the skills you walk away with whether you plan on working with RSC Business Group or not is invaluable.
Franchise Support. What is it to you?
- I do a lot of due diligence on franchises that we work with. Most of the time I call up existing franchisees and act like I am interested in buying a franchise in their system.
I ask a ton of questions just like any normal buyer, they do not know that I am an experienced franchise consultant.
My question for this forum is: What do you consider support from the franchisor?
Is it:
- Communication?
- Brand growth?
- Advertising?
- Assistance?
- Or something else?
The reason I ask this is that some franchisees tell me that they don't get enough support from the franchisor and when I ask them what support they would want, they don't have an answer outside of "helping me get more business".
So I thought I would throw this out to the group and ask you what you consider would be support to a franchisee.

How To Create Your Million Dollar Moment
- I was listening to a skill-set video by a gentleman named Jerry Clark this morning who had a wonderful insight on life actually and how to “arrive” at whatever it is you want to accomplish in life.
Jerry Clark first spoke about how you, because no one can do it for you, but you have to first attract your million dollar moment. Jerry spoke about how he was born in a garage, and grew up very poor, and he remembers asking his mother for new shoes, pants and things of that nature, and his mother’s reply was always “We don’t have enough money…” But it wasn’t until Jerry wanted to take Karate lessons that hearing his mother’s excuse was just the last straw for Jerry and so he decided to take matters into his own hands, and got himself a paper route. Just so that he could pay for the Karate classes he so desperately wanted to do at $40/month.
That’s what we must do with ourselves. At some point we have to say, you know what, the same ole excuse of not having enough money or whatever it is that you are hindering yourself from, you have to kind of get upset with yourself, and say hey, I’m a take action on this thing and just get it done.
So at a young age of 11 years old, that was Jerry’s first “monumental moment.” And from there it can only grow. From there Jerry saw the Mercedes Benz car, homes with movie theatres inside them, and it drove his hunger. Jerry realized at 19 that trading time for dollars, like what most of us do in a job setting is not what’s happening. Entrepreneurs get paid for trading results for dollars. So there is a shift that needs to take place there in order to understand that key concept. Because in a job setting, you can have the crappiest day and not be as effective as you could, and still get paid, but in the entrepreneur world, that’s not the case.
So you must surround yourself with successful people, other entrepreneurs, people who have already produced results.
Jerry describes what is called a Success Triangle. Now picture a triangle, having the three points, and now lets look at the base on the left, Jerry calls that Internal Communication.
Internal Communication is how you communicate with yourself. Your expectation. Your beliefs, philosophies. We must master this.
The next base to the right is the External Communication. This is how you communicate with others. The direct marketing, copy-writing skills. However and whenever possible, you want to study influence. This will help you understand about what makes people tick.
Jerry describes how there are four things that you are going to go through when mastering anything.
One, is time, just like it took and takes time to learn that “thing” on the job, this is going to take time as well. Something like a year or so.
The second is energy, and energy is nothing more than action. You must, must, must take action. Confuscion the greek philospoher once said “To know and not do is yet not to know.” Meaning you might think you know something, but you really don’t know cuz you’re not doing it. So we must take action.
The third is Frustration. No matter how calm or relaxed of a person you are, you will get frustrated, but its important to stay in your lane. That’s my own personal philosophy of frustration. I have lived and have visited several cities, and because I like to drive I find myself in tons and tons of traffic. Now I like to think of myself as a pretty calm and relaxed person, but sitting traffic is the most infuriating thing to me. But my motto is to just stay in your lane, Steer the course, because slow motion is better than no motion, and although its frustrating, you still want to get there. I have seen where cars will pull over and take a break on the shoulder, pull off all together and get a bite to eat, and that’s cool for them. But for me, unless I was already planning to pull over for a bite, or to check my vehicles coolant levels and so forth, I’m not gonna let anything veer me from my course. And my thinking is because you never know how far you have to go before you break through. You could only have ten more yards to go ’til traffic is going to break and you will be right where you want be, smooth sailing. You can’t find that out on the shoulder. There’s an old proverb that says “The darkest hour of the night comes just before dawn.” So we must not give up!
The fourth concept to mastering anything is change. You must always be changing and growing. Its sounds so simple, but its oh so true, but if nothing changes, nothing changes.
So lets get back to the triangle, and the last piece of the triangle at the top is Technical Knowledge. This is the know how, the coaching. The piece that will actually make you money. Sometimes people skip the other two parts and get straight to this piece, the money aspect. Which can work, but without the internal knowledge, what will keep you motivated, how will you react when you become frustrated. You need those internal skills. How will you be able to create a good copywritten sales letter, or how will your conduct be when you are speaking with folks in seminars, meetings, webinars, you need those external communication skills. It all fits together.
The last thing Jerry spoke about and ended the call with was what he called The Slight Edge Concept. Which simply stated that “Everyday in every way you are either performing simple disciplines or simple errors of judgement.”
See discipline is the key. Excellence is not achieved overnight. It is a lifelong journey that we should be working on daily. And we are always working on something whether we know it or not. Just like the saying if you aren’t planning your work, you’re planning to fail. By you not taking interest in your work, you are ensuring your own failure. So The Slight Edge Concept is pretty much saying that everyday we are either making good choices or bad. The disciplines we create in our lives are the determining factor. Just repeat simple disciplines in our lives daily and over time you will see tremendous results.
